New Turbo

Post by Legacy777 »

Got my new turbo this week. I'll be finally putting together this with the AWIC.

http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8 ... mages/td05

It's the monster ported 90 deg inlet TD05 from deadbolt.

I got the turbine & compressor coatings.

Also, the compressor housing inlet was ported. It sort of looks like the compressor outlet was worked too....but I didn't pay for it....

Lastly, I did get a turbine wheel clip....which I know some may not think is a good idea, but from the info I read, and deadbolt's reputation and recommendation, I went ahead with it.

Right on Josh! That is almost exactly the turbo I run except I didn't get the turbine wheel clipped. I love mine, you'll be very happy. :D

I didn't get into specific details with them regarding that, but from the basic question, they said it should be similar, to a little bit more then the stock turbo.

Personally, I don't think there's a real way to tell until it's on the car because of the porting work I had done, as well as the other modifications already on my car.

So...we'll see. I'm going to try and pickup the catch can I'm going to use this week, and may take some time off work the friday after the 4th to get started fitting everything up.

Josh, In the next six months, I'm getting one of these with the works like you. Can't wait to read your review of it. I haven't called Deadbolt with Q's yet but if you have a short answer on what "turbine wheel clip" does or attempts to do or what research you did/read that would be much appreciated...Or send me a link? Thanks a bunch. You are an inspiration to us all <grin> Adam

I did some reading on nasioc, and found a lot of posts, however I did find a few posts from people who I regard as knowing what they're talking about that supported clipping.

I don't recall the specifics, however I can try to dig up the threads.

From memory, in general clipping is done based on the size of the engine the turbo is going on. For a smaller/medium size turbo that is going on a larger motor, clipping helps the engine breathe better at lower rpms, and helps prevent boost creep. The downside according to Deadbolt is a slight decrease in spool up....which he said was around 100-200 rpm. In my mind, that's nothing.

With the engine breathing better at lower rpms, that should improve torque which overcomes the slight decrease in spool up time.

My thoughts were to get the coatings and porting to improve the flow and efficiency of the turbo, which should hopefully drop the spool time back to where it might have been before....whether that will actually hold true....I don't know....and without running an identical turbo without the turbine wheel clipped on my car....we'll never know.

The other thing deadbolt mentioned was that a lot of shops don't check their blanchard grinder to see if it's still in spec. I think he said they replace/check the wheel every 7th turbine wheel they do. He also mentioned the clip they do is very minor compared what some other vendors do.

The bottom line from what I've read is that some vendors have performed turbine wheel clips in the past, and borked it up.....that has spread across the interweb, and become one of those folklore type of things.

In addition, I'm not a turbo expert. I know a little. Deadbolt is a reputable turbo builder. I told him what mods I have done to my car, and he recommended I go with the turbine wheel clip. So I did.

As a side note. My turbo took a little longer to get then normal. Apparently they built one up, and it didn't meet their QC specs/tolerances. So they built me another one. If a vendor is going to do something like that....they are worth trusting IMO.

I'll keep everyone posted as I get everything plumbed up with the intercooler. I wish I was going to be around this weekend, I want to keep working on it.

Josh, Thanks.

Did you need to have an upgraded actuator with the turbo or do they source one for you?

Also, are you doing anything with aftermarket BOV? I've done a bunch of reading on them and the Forge recirculating products sound promising. Wondering which one to get, and if I should get one at all...Personal preference aside why are you leaning one way or the other on these items...etc..

They supply a new wastegate actuator with the turbo. You can choose what you when you want it to actuate. I chose 11 or 13....whatever the stock one was they sold.

Currently I am not planning on doing anything with an aftermarket BOV. If I find that I'm having issues, I will look into something else, however whatever else I get will definitely be recirculating.

Are you wanting to know why I'm leaning towards keeping the stock BOV, or are you asking about all the new turbo stuff?

I guess I really haven't given the BOV much thought as needing to be replaced at this time.
