Hit the dragstrip tonight

Post by mattyg41383 »

Just got back from street night at Lebanon Valley Dragway (West Lebanon, NY ((near Albany)). Overall it was better than I was expecting.

'93 SS - auto - stock engine except for '98 legacy airbox + coffee cup.

15.969 @ 84.81
15.815 @ 84.68
15.759 @ 84.73
15.955 @ 84.69 (ran consecutive runs, engine hot)
15.783 @ 84.96
best 60' - 2.172

still well over a second slower than my '86 XT, but its a good start as far as Im concerned. Front mount is the next step.

I wanted to get an IC going first, make sure things are ready to handle higher boost, i could always throw one of my saab ICs on top but i want to go front, so Im saving up. I'm definately going to be going with a bigger turbo, MBC, 3" exhaust, necessary fuel system changes, etc... I already have DOHC heads, i just need to polish/knife edge them. I'm on the college budget, so I cant do it all in one shot, ya know.

Practice the launch. You're losing about 1/2 a second there with a 2.1 and slower 60 foot times.

I was gonna say that for a, basically, stock auto the 60' is pretty damn good

and nice consistent times, the auto helps that for sure.

Let us know how it progresses :D

yeah, its an auto... if someone can get drastically better 60's with an auto and stock boost, I wanna know the tricks, lol.

I'm gonna check out that link and see if I have free time for that RallyX.

I was M.I.A. for a while... As for how I launch: Line up shallow like usual so I can hit a consistant light, Stomp the brakes, get the boost up to the point where I almost push through the brakes, *third yellow* go. I shift the auto manually as well (if that makes sense).

As for the stoppers; I have EBC Sport Rotors (slotted + dimple drilled) with EBC Green Stuff pads., ABS removed, synthetic fluid.

The track is closed till April, so that sucks.

What does the 98 legacy airbox do for you? First I've heard of that one... :?

Dont try that trick any more if you run higher boost... I sheared an axle in half running 12PSI doing that exact thing.

It also tore the axle stub seal, leading to the eventual destruction of my front diff.

I need your 60' time to better my times, but i'm afraid to repeat what is described above....
I did a 2.415 60', leading to a 14.594 @ 96.41 MPH 1/4 - no brake-torque.

I was using brake torque to get those times, and like was mentioned previously, doing that at a higher boost will most likely end up with broken parts.

Funny thing with my car is that on the street with the TD04 on it would start to spin tires about 1.7 seconds after it was floored (full boost) & run 14.1 1/4s with no alky based on the G-tech, on the track there was 0 wheelspin & it ran 14.59 (14.69 on the G-tech for that pass) @ the same settings / same weak launch.

I'm thinking of using the 45*airbox on my car as you did because the stock MAF inlet is very close to the wall of the stock SS airbox & looks like it may be a bit of a restriction.

The 16G is on now so times should improve some.

I'm starting to think more about the stock MAF location after seeing your times. I am running a stock 90deg box but I'm running a water-to-air intercooler and water/meth injection and my times are 15.9 on a 90+ degree day. This is with a little bit of powerbraking on the 4EAT and stock boost.
I also have my snorkle cut out but I'm gunna go to the next step and do something about my air box. I'm even considering moving the airbox into the fender where the snorkle used to be. I even have a K&N filter in there!

nice times BTW.
