Y-Pipe Mod

Post by Threshld1 »

So ive been having problems with my modified OEM y-pipe setup. So i came across a samco silicon y-pipe locally i felt like cutting up.

As we know the 22T intake manifold places the intercooler turbo feed a few inches 'back' from where it needs to be. Making fitment of an OEM plastic Y not possible. Since i put my TMIC on ive been using a modified OEM Y acquired from a local forum member. He used a ~<1 5/8" OD pipe sleeved into it connecting to a same ID section of radiator hose to the turbo.
This wasnt a problem untill i swapped out the stock turbo. To use the 16G i had to get a 90* 1 7/8" ID hose to fit the outlet. This forced me to clamp the crap out of the larger 1 7/8" hose to make it seal on the smaller sleeve.

So i cut the samco at the end of the Y right in the middle of the straight section before the 90* to the turbo. Then i found a 1 7/8" OD x 3" metal pipe to sleeve between the Y and the 90* 1 7/8" napa hose ive been using to fit the larger (vs VF11) 16g outlet. Everything fits perfectly.

The new setup seen here is working much better. Personally i noticed a large change in drivability/response.
So i dunno if anyone is willing to pony up the money and sacrifice the resale of one of these to do it but thought i would share.

What I did when I went to the 16G was use the samco hose ( from the turbo to the intercooler) and cut it right after the turbo bend. Then put in a 5 inch metal spacer tube with a flange welded to it for the DV. works great. Sounds like you ended up doing close to the same thing.

so did you plug the TMIC BPV flange and run it from the spacer back to the inlet? have any pictures? any difference in operation?

Yeah, that is the exact same thing i did before and after. it definitely made a big difference in the way it ran. probably because it actually sealed

Same here, except I bought some other brand silicone y-pipe and actually split it wide open at the y at ~14psi. After that I welded up a full steel y-pipe that attaches to the silicone 90 and some rubber couplers at the TMIC inlets. I bet I won't have any problems from that sucker!

Pics are linked towards the bottom of my post, they are too big to post in the thread. Or click here. If anyone else has pictures of their setups with the Y pipe fitment please post them

I purchased a full Perrin Y-pipe and cut it on that little straight between the y and the 90*. Went to AutoZone and bought a pipe and clamps...forgot what size pipe...but cut it to length and put it on. Looks great and should work just fine!

Power from this compared to the stock one? I dunno..... but I had to get this to make sure it works....hehe now just 2.5 more weeks for wires to get back.
