This was being hashed out in a parts thread; I thought it might merit it's own...
In order to install a '02-'03 WRX (or ANY late model Subaru stock stereo {except Mc Intosh}) all you need to do is buy this pigtail from Crutchfield:
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/ ... 2977&avf=Y
This replaces the stock plug in our cars directly, and enables plug & play capability with newer stereos. You'll have to solder or crimp the new plug in place of the old one, but the wires are basically the same.
You lose the clock, and also the WRX unit has no provision for aux input, but the 6-disc/cassette stereo is very nice, and can be had cheap. The '02-'03 units are black, and look good in our cars. Later models went grey-silver and lost the cassette player.
You end up with about a 3/4" gap under the unit, above the ashtray, convenient for mounting auxiliary electronic controls.
