How to remove this plastic nut?

In an attempt to remove what I think is the speedo cable, I came across this plastic piece of $@!% nut. It's a 17mm, but the damn thing is plastic and my wrench just slips.
Here are some helpful photos:

Thanks in advance.

Slip-joint pliers (water pump pliers), the biggest one you can get in there.

Are you just trying to remove the speedo cable? It splits on the covered part up a little bit. There is a spring that holds it together.

I'm dropping my trans.

If you are dropping the trans, just use the break in the cable 2 inches further up, as suggested. You don't even need a wrench to release it.

Oh, OK. I get it now.

So you just pull it apart after you take off that spring, or is it threaded? Either way mine isn't coming apart easily. It was covered in corrosion. I cleaned it up, but I've been tugging and twisting and it's not moving. Am I missing something, or is it just going to be a bitch to take apart?

Is it suposed to come apart right at the clip, or does it slide out of the metal tube? I pulled it apart and it came out of the tube. Is that supposed to happen or do I need a new cable now?

The cable has a metal end on it that slides into the other tube. The spring grabs the notch on the metal end of the cable to hold it in place. The square end the the actual cable will be sticking out.
