5MT internals the same?

Post by Binford »

Are the turbo 5MTs the same gear ratios as the non-turbos? I'm talking about 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. I know the differentials are different. Anybody here know?

My question is still a little unanswered. Can you inner change parts between the turbo trans and the non turbo trans.

No, Things change from year to year and model to model. I made a Frankenstein transmission for our SS Legacy out of 4 different transmissions. Let me tell you, this was a BITCH! Differences between gears and the actual case very throughout the years. I found it to all be trial and error.

When I use car-part.com i only come up with one option fro a 91 ss but when i search for 92-94 i get tons of transmissions. The price is also much more expensive for the 92-94 vs the 91. is ther a actual differenct in the 91 vs the 92-94.

That I can not tell you. I would ASSUME so, but not 100% on it. I can tell you for a fact that the WRX's very from year to year. And the transmission case from the 90's is different then the current 5mt.

There gear ratios may be the same, but as discussed there are small changes to how the internals are put together, syncros, etc. The best I can suggest is to download the parts book from me and compare the part #'s for certain components in the transmission and see what part #'s are the same or different.

Yes, thank you! I'm looking to mix and match some parts out of my several "broken" transmissions and come up with one or two "usable" ones. :D
