Interchanging spedometer cable?

Post by LGT Kirby »

Swapping in a Forester tranny, and the location for the spedo cable is further back on the tranny compared to the stock 4EAT. Question is if I run to a junk yard, find a longer spedo cable from a Subaru, will it hook up fine to both the tranny and cluster?

My thoughts are, yes, its a Subaru. Lol.

Thoughts appreciated.

Also can't figure out where the from stay bushings for the shifter mount onto. I thought they went directly to the tranny, but I dont see a bracket for it, and I doubt it just is a single bolt that holds it on (Based on pictures I found on google images)

Manual tranny cars have a short speedo cable extension on the tranny. I am not sure if the main cable is the same as an automatic however.

There is a stamped steel bracket that has the shifter stay stud on it. It bolts over the small rear cover on the tranny. It uses 4 of the original 6 bolts. (or 3 of 5)

I reused my AT trans speedo cable with my 5mt swap, and it's been working fine.

Well I was curious on how these legacies have a manual odometer and the forester has a digital odometer. Not sure how that works.

The digital odometer & micro computer in the gauge cluster is tied to the ECU I believe to keep track of mileage.

Are you talking about whether the speedometer input pin is going to be the same between the 98 & 95?

You could try and just repin the ECU.

Yeah I put a 98 Forester engine into my 96 Legacy, and used a 97 Outback ECU. Worked perfectly. I just had to plug one vacuum port on the intake manifold so I could use the Legacy's cruise control.
