Leak?

Post by robertpaige »

Does this sound like a vaccum leak?

Comes in at 0:25 it's a real loud whoooosh and whine.

I am also worried my turbo might be headed out the door. Losing oil and the chimney reaks of oil when hot.. it's a stock VF11 with 260k on it so I wouldn't be surprised.

First turbo car so maybe I have no idea what i'm talking about :smt102

Yeah, sounds like the turbo is going out. You can find vf11's on here for stupid cheap. I'll have one with 112k original miles on it. No shaft play etc, that is, if you were trying to keep things simple and leave everything stock. I think the stock vf11 can handle boost pressures into the teens, yet thats not a good idea due to not being intercooled usdm. I'm not sure what the vf11's are selling for on here but I'll sell you mine 100$ shipped if thats reasonable...... anyone chime in here. It has the intake 90 and everything

You also kind of need a boost guage to tell if you are having a vaccume leak. I think our engines should be in the 22-18 range when off boost. Some one correct me if im wrong as I just got back my car after being stolen for almost 3 months

Thanks for the input!
(BTW good to hear you have your baby back! I can tell it's been a long journey..)

Planning on doing the TD04/TMIC upgrade pretty soon here. They're cheap on CL down here, found one for $100 yesterday but don't have that damn cash.. but I plan on getting a boost gauge soon here to see what i'm running at. I am pretty sure the turbo is going bad but I just want opinions.

Well, I do plan on taking a trip to cannon beach after the first of the year. If you want me to bring my vf11 and know how for the swap, we could have it done in a half of a day. With tools ofcourse

I have a buddy with a garage, that might be something we could do! I really want a TD04 though. How hard was it to install the TD04? Did you have to modify a bunch?

I honestly have never owned a turbo car until this one. With a little guidance from two friends and two threads on here, I was able to do it all by my self in two days. The Td04 is a simple swap, it really is. Once you get down and see where the return lines for the oil and where the coolant lines go, then you'll get it quick. You can use your stock oil and coolant lines from the vf11 for the td04, but youll have to cut the coolant one in half where the metal brings the two together. Super easy!

Can a turbo leak coolant internally? I cannot seem to find where the coolant steam is from under my hood.. I am not leaking anything to the ground, my tank and lines are not leaking either. My tank keeps loosing coolant, and the steam smells like coolant coming from my hood scoop. it's wide open right now, no IC installed, so a lot pours out. With the hood open its coming from the right side near the turbo outlet.. but I can't pin point it. The turbo is blown completely and will be swapped with another VF11 as soon as I receive it in the mail.. just wondering if that could be the case.

When I Seafoamed my car, the only area of the engine bay that I saw smoke coming from was the turbo.. So I am almost positive that's where my big leak is coming from. And I think it's possible it's releasing coolant and steaming out

Unless the turbo is cracked internally, which I don't think is the case, I don't think coolant is leaking internally.

You really need a coolant pressure tester to pressurize the system and check for leaks. I broke down and bought one a few years ago, because I had a similar issue with my AWIC system and couldn't find the leak.

Additionally, you could try getting one of those UV test kits and pour UV dye in the coolant and then use a black light to see where the leak is coming from.

I started running hot tonight on the way home, pulled over and steam pouring out from my hood.. popped the hood and I'm hearing all sorts of bubbling and stuff with steam coming up from the passenger side head, I look down between the manifold and theres coolant everywhere, in all the pockets and stuff. So basically my passenger head gasket is shot and that's been the culprit of my coolant loss.

Great.

Check the coolant lines to IAC I've had those blow on me before.

Thanks for that tip, i'll check it out asap. Is it possible for my coolant temp sensor to maybe have cracked and leak coolant out of that? also where are the coolant lines going TB?

Those are coolant lines that go to the throttle body and/or IAC like Rallyak was talking about. And yes they can leak.

Perfect. I am gonna check that. It seems like that's exactly where the steaming was coming from. I am really hoping it is.

I could see them leaking if they're the original ~20 year old rubber pieces. Happened to me once - gave the underside of the hood a syruppy steam bath lol.

Agh, I can only hope that I only need to buy a $2 piece of heater hose to correct my issue.

Of course you can't, it needs to be a formed hose. But you can do what I did and take your old hoses to the parts store and ask them to find you something that has the same bends in it. All the stores I've been to they tried to look them up and there's no listings. Or oem at the stealership.

Would it be a bad idea to put stop leak in my car just for the next few days until I figure out exactly what's wrong? Then just flush it out.. it's my DD and I need to drive..

Stop leak clogs up your radiator and heater core. Once it's hardened it's impossible to get all of it out.

The 'water inlet hose' was split wide open. I got the outlet hose off no prob, but I can't reach the inlet hose without taking off the manifold.. so i'm trying to be extra careful not to break any hoses. At least I can clean all the gunk off of everything.

Also, can someone tell me what this line does and if it can be capped off? it's hose i'm holding.

That hose you're holding goes to the intake resonator (or coffee cup mod, if you have one of those). Hose J:

Right, but would I be able to cap that hose without an issue? I thought I read about how you could just disable that line when you did the coffee cup mod. The reason i'm asking is cause someone messed up the nipple on my resonator box and i'm wondering it I can just remove that line and seal the hole on the box.

ALSO, I cannot find the bypass air control solenoid valve inlet or outlet coolant hose part numbers, or even on the parts website. Does anyone know what they might be filed under?
