Re: Random engine cut out - please help
The two wires were exposed behind the intercooler. There is a small container on the back left of the intercooler, it looked like this had rubbed on the wires and caused the wire exposure. The two wires were part of a thick loom, maybe 1" wide. The intercooler shouldn't move this far as on idle...

Re: Random engine cut out - please help
OK. I had a dedicated power and earth lead put in. Picked car up from auto electrician, but couldn't test it because I drove 100m down the road and riped all the teeth off 5th gear!!!!! :( So this was Wednesday and racing Sunday. Quickly trailered the car home and started pulling out the gearbox. Af...

Re: Random engine cut out - please help
OK. Spent another whole weekend on the car. My next race is next weekend and the car still has the same problem. I took the car to an auto electrician and they could not find the voltage problem that appeared on the PcLink software. They also could not find any other problems, but they could make th...

Re: Random engine cut out - please help
OK. Another weekend spend on my problem rally car. I replaced the LINK ecu with a standard ecu, it run pretty rough (probably doesn't link the bigger injectors) but anyway it had the same problem as the LINK, so its probably not the LINK that is faulty. Next, I re-installed the link and setup the PC...

Re: Random engine cut out - please help
Legacy777 - the ignition control module is a standard part that the LINK controls. I'm not that knowledgable on automotive stuff, it may not be called an ignition control module. kimokalihi - I don't think it is a mechanical problem. Some more news over the weekend as well. I replaced the ignition c...

Re: Random engine cut out - please help
Hello. Thanks for reply. I've had a good look over the engine harness and can't find any visible damage to the wires. I'm using the MAP setup with the LINK. Since my last post I have checked the fuel pressure and this seems fine. The problem is still happening and I need it fixed by the end of the m...

Random engine cut out - please help
Hi, Its been a long time since my last post. My 1989 legacy RS rally car has been running great.... until recently. I have a problem with a random engine cut out, I think it is electrical but I guess it could be fuel. Anyways, the cut out seems to happen at any RPM but it always when the engine is p...

A late update. I found the problem to why I couldn't get any grip. No one ever told me that the drummond suspension I have needs the brushes/bearing re-geased every 2nd event or so. I had never re-geased in the 2.5 years of owning them. I must sound like a dumb arse by now. Anyway. I did a re-gease ...

HI. I checked the cetner diff as is above. I takes alot of effort to spin the rear wheels with the front wheel left on the ground. I'm guessing this means the center diff is working ok. But I notice the could spin the rear wheels different direction (person on other wheel spining in other direction)...

No swaybars is alot nicer to drive on gravel. Horrible on tramac tho!!!! But some gravel can be so hard packed it is like tramac to drive on and some swaybars would be good then. I really need smaller swaybars than standard but these are hard to find. I have played with only the rear one in and only...

Testing a center diff
Hi. I have a Legacy RS 1989 rally car. Done lots of power mods, but it still lacks in torque. Not sure what else to do without spending lots of money. Anyway. I seem to have problems on the tight twisty roads and slippy surfaces keeping up with other cars. I not the best driver in the world but I ke...

How to make my box stronger
Hi, I have a 1989 Legacy RS turbo 4WD rally car. Have done some work to engine, turbo, injectors, ecu, exhaust, inlet. I'm having problems with it blowing gearboxes. Normally ripping teeth off 2nd or 3rd, but also breaking keyway on 5th. Has anyone got any tips to make these box abit stronger? I hav...

Question on rally legacy diffs
Hi, I got an old school 1989 Legacy RS turbo with lots of tricks. But recently fitted a plate style front LSD diff. Still got the viscous LSD rear and viscous LSD center. My question is: When the front and rear diffs bind and put load on center diff what happens? Does the center diff slip and put po...

From outside the car the boxer noise is noce at low in revs but at high revs sounds like Honda, thats what I think. NA models never sound as good tho. I think the exhaust might be flowing to well, its making that air hissing noise alittle. Maybe a smaller pipe or tip would sound better. In NZ we don...

The amount of PSI you run shouldnot effect your turbo lag. Whether you run 7psi or 15psi you would still reach 7 psi at the time same - probably faster on 15psi as wastegate would be shut at 7 psi. I like the soft suspension as it is easier to throw the weight of the car around, hard suspension on a...

I have done abit of AutoX in NZ. I beleive you want soft suspension with lots of travel and than fit swaybars front and back. Having toe out (wheel alignment) front and back will make the car more sideways in the corner, which is great for autocross as tracks are normally tight (bad for rally!). Sub...

Quick question on WRX's
Hi, I know this is a Legacy site but I got a WRX question. Does anyone know how much boost a non-STI WRX runs when standard? I guess the psi level changes throught the years, but if you know a year let me know - year & psi. 1996 and 1993 are the years of interest. If you know the STI psi level f...

Problem sounds like it is related to the steering settings. Probably not related to problem with rear suspension, although this will not help handling of car. I would get the toe settings checked by a wheel alignment shop. The car wondering on the road (bump steer) is normally related to the amount ...
