What is the advantage to using the wrx struts?

Thanx, is there an easy way to tell if the springs are worn out? Or, is this not usually the case?

I am looking at doing the same job to my 1990 L wagon. I KNOW the struts are toast but was wondering if I should also put new springs in? The struts are prolly original.
