AWIC GM Heater Core Installation

More for reference than anything else, I'm posting pictures of the heater core installation Laurel and I performed on her car while her front bumper was off.

We'll get the exact part number shortly. ;)

You all remember how I had to pound the shit out of these retarded flanges on the bumper. . . .

Well, once pounded so the radiator could fit, they were in the way of the airflow to the very radiator we pounded them over to fit. We cut them all off using an airsaw and cutoff wheel. (Not shown) I then primered then painted the cut areas to prevent any possible corrosion.


Here you can see that they just had to go. .

The outermost markings are the ones I used to cut the ends of the water lines to a manageable length:

Here you can see that we installed the heater core as close to the center of the car as possible to not only maximize airflow, but also to leave as much room as possible to fit the water supply hoses to the radiator. (Note the two convenient holes under where the driver's side headlight housing mounts to run the supply and return water lines through.) ;)

Do you know what car the heater core was meant for?

Are heater cores designed to withstand exposure to the elements?

Bravo Art, I'll be using your knowledge in the future with a complete parts list of the whole project so I can do this all in one day/evening without any unnecesary trip to the auto store.

I think the part that'll require the most time is definitely the bumper beam hack job. After having taken an airsaw and cutoff wheel to it, I realized that the pounding I did to those flanges was very necessary to make the cutting of them far more effective, and easier.

Add to that, grinding smooth the cut areas, primer and paint . . . all of which I did, and tried not to rush.

I'd just plan a full weekend of work if you want to keep your car down for a minimum amount of time.

Day 1: Removal and "augmentation" of bumper beam, perhaps install intercooler and air ducting while finishing the bumper's primer and paint process.

Day 2: Attaching of the radiator to the rear of the bumper beam, replacement of the bumper beam, running of the water lines and installation of the water pump.

Granted, we know a bit more about all this than when we started, so I'm making an educated guess on the time needed to get it all done. ;)

Hey art. Maybe think about drilling more holes in that bumper beam to allow better airflow through those 2 beams that cover the radiator. Looks like it covers almost half of the IC's radiator.

The install is looking great tho. Have you mounted the AWIC yet? Cant wait to see it finished.

also, there's no point in it, the bumper cover covers everything else up. If you were to drill holes upwards and down at an angle it would just whistle and get shit stuck in it

I know the GM one is considerably smaller, but a little radiator is better than no radiator. I can always get another if I feel inclined to hook 2 up and tear my bumper off again

In city driving, air/water intercoolers often work almost as well with the pump turned off as they do with it in.

And there are some Porsches with giant intercoolers mounted in the rear of the vehicle, where they get very little ambient air. They still work much of the time.

A lot of the time all you need is a big heat sink, not active cooling.

How does the ADM exchanger fit in the ADM cars? What is different?

Yes. . . just like ADM gets all the sweet Jspec cars . . . I'm sure they have Jspec (ie: bumper beams) attached to them. :)

What was wrong with cutting the bumper beam to fit?

How thick is the bumper beam? I'm gonna have to drill a few holes in it I think....

Nothing's WRONG with cutting it. . . it's just a royal pain in the ass. And even then, it's still leaving less space between it and the AC condenser than the JDM one probably is.
