High-pitched wining noise when cold?

Post by flammenwurfer »

Hi everybody. I don't own a Legacy YET, but the 92 turbo Sport Sedan I'm looking at I test drove yesterday and before it warmed up there was a somewhat high whining noise when I accellerated. However it went away after I drove it for a while and it warmed up.

Is this normal for this car? The salesman told me it was just the turbo and it was normal but I'm not so sure. Thanks!

If it's a squeel, it's prolly a belt. If it's a whistle and a hummish sound then it's the turbo.

OK, so is it normal for the turbo to make a hummish sound when cold?

It should be more of a sssssssssss, but only when you accelerate after about 1500RPMS/ A noisy belt is going to sqeel like eeeeeeeeeee when you accelerate or possibly when you just turn it on.

Well I have a Supra turbo, so I know what a turbo sounds like and this wasn't like any turbo sound I've ever heard. It was much louder and whinier.

the noise of the turbo would not go away like you said this did.

subaru turbos easy to hear as it practically sits on the firewall.
