I think only Subaru does this. It's an annoying feature that has gotten lots of people.

Yeah, it's happened to pretty much every Subaru owner, so don't feel special. ;)

The reason they do that is so that you can leave your parking lights on without leaving the keys in, since normally the external lights only work with the ignition turned on.

2 weeks ago i bought my 94 turbo wagon-for 300. As soon as i put in my new battery so i could drive it home, noticed the lights on the side fenders, and front side, and rear, stayed on. when i got the car home, i just figured it was a wiring problem-ya know, 300 and gotta expect some things will be wrong. so i took the fuse out not to run the battery down. that night found this website, and spent about 8 hours reading up on everything possible. Found the section about the switch on the console-that was all it was. Just me being a new Subie owner . What would you ever need to have the switch ON for?
Oh well.

If you hook up auxiliary lights through the parking lights, you can use them with the ignition off to illumintae the woods when you're burying bodies. Subaru engineers thought of everything.

Some places require by law the ability to turn the parking lights on without the key in the ignition.

Blame law makers, not Subaru engineers. They are only catering to that law. Having the headlights turn off with the key is the most common-sense thing I could ever think of.

Fo' Sheezy! These cars that beep and blang, and make incessant noise just cause your fuckin' lights are on is whack, yo. Why is it our cars make sense, and no one else's does? It's like, if the car's not confusing, people think there's something wrong with the way it was designed.

You're so stupid, I'd never do anything like that. And I'd certanly not troubleshoot the "problem" for 3hrs in subzero temps and snow
