instrument cluster differences
I replaced my cluster from my 92 ss auto with one Matt Monson had (not sure what year or model).
The one he had was for a manul trans and mine is an auto.
All the critical stuff worked like speedo, tach, fuel, and temp, but weird things were lighting up.
ex. the right rear door light was always on and the trunk light would light when the drivers door was open.
So I unplugged the top right plug and everything seemed to work fine (except the door and trunk lights in the cluster, but how cares).
Then later that day I started throwing a vehicle speed sensor 2 code.
Thought this was kind of interesting.

I know the 90-91 clusters are different from the 92-94 clusters, not to mention the AT & MT clusters are different. I also think the wagon and sedan clusters are different because I don't think the sedans have a trunk open light....or at least mine does not.
I can try and remember to take a look and see how many different part #'s there are for the clusters.
You may want to reset your ECU. It's possible the signal coming from the speed sensor in the dash is off slightly to the old one, and is confusing the ECU.

I'm assuming you have an airbag....am I right?
There's quite a few different combination meters, and looking at the wiring diagrams, there's definitely some changes that were made in the pin outs, plus the MT & AT meters had conisistent differences.
If you can clarify whether your 92 MY sport sedan had an airbag or not I should be able to give you the correct part # you need
Why did you change meters?

I don't have an airbag.
I broken the temp needle, and Matt just happen to have what I needed.
I will just get the correct one from Matt.
I took the mt one because the auto one was still in the car, and I wanted to see if the mt one would work.
I would be interested to see what the differences are though.
Thanks
Troy

i had this prob jus take the cluster apart and replace the tranny tree and car status deal. the prob is the sedan wagon difference. and 90-92 did not have airbags unless it was a 92 turbo. 90-91 had a brake light out light. and thats all i can think right now

Airbags were NOT standard in 1992 for the SS. I believe they were just optional.
93 and 94 were the years that the SRS was standard.

In my 91 auto when i tried to swap in a manual gauge cluster i had the same problem... I just swapped all of the guts(tach, speedo, temp and fuel gauges) over from the manual one, into the chassis of my automatic one. worked like a champ

you remove all the the screws on the face first, then flip it over and remove all the screws from the back. you can't remove the temp and fuel gauges from the face, believe me, i know. so just get the face off, then pull the speedo/tach, then stick it all in the other one. temp/fuel gauges should switch over to either chassis, so if you wanna use the originals, then go for it, really depends on what you're trying to switch out.
