Speedo cable compatibility?

Post by 206er »

has anyone used an AT speedo cable on a MT trans? they are definitely different but have the same size tab that fits into the trans and turns the cable. on the AT cable the tab sticks out about 1/8" more and is removable. I want to use the AT cable because that way I wont have to pull the dash to put the MT cable on the speedo. or is there an easier way?

This depends on which trans you are using. The push style transmission have the speedo connector farther to the rear than the pull style transmissions, on manuals. Automatics have the speedo connector in the same place as the pull style. So if you're switching to a pull tranny you're alright. That said it's definately possible to put in and take out the speedo with the dash completely in tact. I can even do it now without removing the "tray".

huh. well I am going to be running a push trans out of a 91. I think the AT cable will reach, but if not I guess I will be pulling the gauge cluster. car is ready to accept the 5mt, I'll probably get it in on tuesday. might take another day or two to get everything sorted.

It wont reach and you may end up pulling apart the cable trying to make it reach as I did, but there's no reason to pull the dash or the cluster. position yourself in the footwell and look up at where the speedo is. get a flashlight if you need it, you can see the cable just tug back on it. It should pop right out.
