CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK......she's dead. I'm sad.
PLEASE SEE MY LATEST POST FOR PICTURES.
As I set forth on my journey today to go visit Subyluvr and grab some lunch, my car decided it didn't want to go all the way. Long story short, I was stuck in a very small, crappy town all day trying to get the kegacy up to full potential so I could drive her back home safely.
There were times during thr ride thst the car was running great and would fly, then a few small times I lost a ton of acceleration and just ran like crap.
Here are the problems:
Idled so bad I damn near got sick.
Strong burning smell
Extreme gas consumptiion
Little to no accleration (sputters real bad)
I had to drive all the way home in 3rd gear just to keep the revs up enough to keep it going around 40 mph
I start the car now and it dies out unless I hold the gas peddle down.
No smoke, and no fluids leaking anywhere.
It threw up no CEL but when I connected the two black terminals I got the following codes. (after connecting two green)
22
33
42
If anybody has anything they feel I should look for or test please let me know. As it is now the car is undrivable. This really sets us back because we only have one car.
I aslo want to apologize to Mike. Sorry Mike.

How would I go about checking it?
I would imagine that would throw a CEL.
I put my hand on the coil when I shut the car off and it wasn't hot.
The wires and plugs are farily new
Timing appears to be dead on.
Tommorow I am going to pull the plugs and see if they have a story to tell. Anyting I should look for??

About the only layman's way to check the MAF sensor would be to pull a JY one on and throw that on there. If it doesn't do it anymore, you found your problem. If it still does, that wasn't it. You're out about $10-$20
If you want, you can get technical and get your multimeter out and test the MAF that way, but I'm not 100% sure on how to do it...

I had the same problem, but only occasionally but about all the same symtems except the burning smell.
Vacumn leak AND a plug wire that was nut pressed on all the way.
I would drive and it would run just fine and dandy. Then the entire engine would cut out for a half second, back to running then again and again and again, then back to running fine.
Check all your intake hoses and even the little vacumn lines. I had problems with both.
I also thought it was my MAF but thankfulley it was not.
To see if your spark plugs are actaully firing, stick a timing light on all of them and watch. Thats how I figured out mine was having problems. Two wires fired all the time, one on and off and the fourth was dead, yet when I pulled the plug out and ran the wagon with it out, the plug fired. Stuck it back in and it didnt fire. I have Magnecor wires and they require a longer tipped plug. I picked those up tonight and wow, new car. Amazing what running on 4 cylinders will do for you esteem.

Try unhooking your O2 sensor. Just for giggles. I had a similar problem once and it was the O2 sensor wiring...

If you've got oil smoke from the headgaskets they much be in horrible shape and as such your coolant would be full of oil. If you've got as much smoke as you say and it's from the headgaskets then your shit is really fucked. I don't know what the problem is, but I can tell you what it isn't.

if you had a bad misfire I wouldn't worry about some smoke and such...its just burning what was laying in the cylinder(s) when that cylinder wasn't firing
when you run the car under those conditions you can get a lot of gas in the oil in relatively short order, so it is important to change the oil (twice, even) after you get it sorted out.
Look for spark first, or the lack thereof. Pull the plugs and see what type of fouling you've got, it won't help to try anything with the plugs crusted over. Clean 'em up and check one by one for spark.
and get a $20 multimeter, my crappy one has lasted me 10 years

That beer you are drinking cost more than my car

I don't hate you for getting rid of the car -- in fact, if I were nearer to you I would probably try to buy it from you -- but I think you should try this most basic check first. Try asking Mike if you can try Patti's ignitor and coil for a few minutes. If one or the other turns out to be the problem, I have an ignitor and a Diamond coil pack sitting on my desk right in front of me that I'd send you cheap.

Oh, for some reason I thought you guys lived close to each other. Well, any Legacy or Impreza up through 96 or so should do. And certain 2.5-liter models up through 1999 or so too.
The Diamond coil pack's in so-so condition (if I were using it I'd first clean it up with a wire wheel and then give it a quick spray with black Krylon)... if you want the coil pack and ignitor I can send 'em to you for... um, let's say $35 shipped?
