v2 tmic install questions

Post by azn2nr »

ok heres the situation. vf 39 and a v2 intercooler slanted style with the turbo to intercooler pipe included.

k after looking thorugh all of the intercooling that have anything to do wiht top mounts i have yet to come across pictures that still work of this setup besides boostjunkies.

now the questions.

i swear i have seen before pictures of a v2 with the coolant tank still in its stock position not rotated or anything. and looking at boostjunkies setup i ponder that it is possible. but the question remains does the coolant tank need to be moved???

next. what is the igniter and where is it? i keep seeing it come up when intercooling top mount style.

last. does anyone have any ideas or sugestions on what may or may not go wrong whilist installing this intercooler setup?

I think it might fit with the coolant tank in it's stock location but....
If it is close it will get banged around and break off that nipple sooner or later. With my luck it would be out of cell range and far from help, I would say it needs to be moved.

The igniter is the small black thing mounted near the engine pitch brace. I moved it to the firewall aimed up not out in the way of an intercooler.

A VF-39 and a V2 top mount? Do you just want to try everything?

It can be made to fit with the coolant tank in the stock position. What you have to do is cut off the mounting tab on that corner of the intercooler.

It'd still be putting some stress on the tank and hoses, though, so you still might want to figure out an alternative. I just got rid of my filler tank for now. I stuck a filler neck in my upper radiator hose, added a goofy ball-valve "IV drip" burping thing to the burp fitting on the radiator, and joined the two 12mm hoses that used to go to the tank.

Search for a thread by QuickDrive where he documents his intercooler installation. He took lots of pictures.

i actualy was looking at quickdrives post but all of his pics are down.

as for why, this is for windchaser. i have the vf39 and access to a v2. he already has a wrx ( usdm ) intercooler that he wants to adjust the endtanks to make it fit but the v2 is cheap and should fit better with less modifacation. in fact i think it should bolt on but i have been wrong before.

i saw someone say that moving the coolant tank was fairly easy and that you could just twist it around. can anyone post on exactly how to do that.

That was me, but I was wrong. While it looks pretty good mounted that way, it's too high. It can hit the hood when the engine rocks on its mounts.

The intercooler he has now would be a better use of time and money as far as effeciency goes.

hes probaly gonna use the wrx tmic eventualy but he wants to refab the endtanks so that he doesnt have to pound in the firewall in. plus the v2 is cheap should bolt right in. the coolant tank and the igniter are the only things that might get in the way so far but its still a might.

If you find a way to mount the Intercooler pretty solid it might be OK. Make sure it is mounted to the engine/transmission not the firewall so it moves with the engine. Maybe some bracket around the coolant tank to keep the IC from touching the coolant tank nipple that is easy to break. The ignighter will be in the way but only takes a minute to move.

I wouldn't worry about the fit too much, my AWIC fit like a dream with the right angle turbo outlet. The turbo to IC pipe fit up fine and the IC to TB was fine. V2 should fit just the same there.

I know the V2 is not the greatest IC but it was on a car that made close to 300hp. Think about that before you bash it too much.

I wasn't trying to bash it, but what wrx made close to 300 hp?

v2 sti and 96 wrx=same motor=rated at 280bhp.

under personal experience ive seen the v2 motor in a gc stock with the 1.8 tranny beat a bugeye with an aps dr500 fmic vf23 740 cc injectors utec and a txs stealth back with prodrive axle back tuned by trey cobb on a race map and c16 at 5000 feet. so yeah i wouldnt bash this intercooler at all.

did i mention that the race took place after 2 hours of hard canyon driving on an 75 degree day, so heat soak deffitaly was an issue for the v2

Yup that's the car I'm talking about. I might be interested in that IC if your buddy doesn't use it.

The v2 STi didn't use the same intercooler as a 96 WRX. The STi intercooler flows better.

The STi intercooler has different end tanks (or at least a different upper one). It also has a different inlet pipe; the non-STi's inlet pipe is tremendously restrictive. The STi intercooler was also silver-colored rather than black. The core may or may not be the same aside from color; I don't know.

the autospeed report showed that the intercoolers themselves without the feedpipe flowed nearly identical. The sti version was i think 3 cfm more. With the wrx feedpipe, yes it'll flow less than the sti feed pipe. So get yourself some silicon hoses and make it flow as much as the sti version or, more likely, better.
