I like the combo boxer trim with Boss 302 style hood paint.

They were known for blowing heads gaskets, but I would check the electrical connection at the rad fan to make sure it has a good contact. My XT did the same thing, the connector and prongs were all crusted up. I cleaned them and it works fine.

I can tell ya it's an ea82. There are three different versions of heads for it, as Subaru revised the design a couple times becuase of the overheating problems. You may want to find some gen 3 heads while your doing headgaskets. You can tell the gen 3 heads by the stamping of "EA82" has a box around it.

Here is an engine pic:
This will do nicely in the above pictured engine bay.

Here is an engine pic: I have a brand new OEM Subaru spare tire mount kit for this vehicle so thats out of the way.
Is it easy to turbo these than the EJ22's?
I sure did screw that up...I hit quote when I meant to edit.

Thay had turbo versions of the EA82. I'd swap in an N/A EJ22 before that, though. Never was a fan of the twin T-belt engine personally, but I love the EA81s. The EJ is a much better design all around with better power. Even a stock EJ22 would move in that car (more power than the stock turbo EA82s) plus you'd get excellent mileage.

yeah that would be a great car. I looked into a EJ motor swapped to a ea81 hatch a while back. I would be doing it if the damn axles were the same.
someday maybe, custom axles aint cheap Im sure. ea82 has the 25 spline axles up front just like ej cars whereas ea81's are 23 spline and you cant easily do a 5 lug swap. dunno if I'd want a fast car with the brakes those things have.

Yeah, I wouldn't want a turbo EJ in an EA81 without the necessary brake upgrades, which would cost big $$ and or time for the custom work involved. As it is, the N/A EJ22 has nearly double the power of the EA81. The simplicity and ease of the pushrod and gear-driven cam EA81 even leaves the EJ in the dust, though. Just wish it had dual port heads. The 3-bearing crank I can handle. My dream is an EJ transplant into an EA81 hardtop.

EA81s were the pushrod 1.8 liter 8 valve pushrod engines with gear driven cam, 3 main bearings, and single port intake and exhaust heads. They came in a turbo version with FI paired with an auto, and the rest were carbed, either a Hitachi (better) or Carter-Weber. In the bigger valve and final 1984 guise (although they were carried on in the hatch back and BRAT until 1987), they made 73 HP @ 4800 rpm and 90 lbs/ft @ 2400 rpm IIRC. The plugs, belts, and water pump could literally be done by a blind person in under half an hour.
From what I understand, the EA82 is basically the same block, but with new OHC heads that have a belt drive for each side (rather than the single which drives the EJs). The stupid thing about them is that one belt runs the accesories while the other runs just the cam. If I'm wrong on any of this or left something out, I'm more than sure I'll be corrected.

You pretty much covered it Steve.
The EA's all have 3 main bearings, while EJ's have 5 main bearings, which explains why EJ's are always a bit smoother than EA's.
I thought all pushrod EA's came with carbs though, even turbos. I could be wrong myself on that one.
The only thing Steve, the EA82 timing belts only drive the cams. They still have drivebelts for the accessories, including the water pump. Also, the EA81 was used in the Brat through 87 like you said, but it was used through 89 in the hatch.
I honestly prefer doing EA82 timing belts, because the tensioners are spring-loaded instead of hydraulic, so they're a snap to retension, and when you have two timing belts, you only have to worry about timing one cam at a time instead of two.

So the old one's done in, then. If it were a manual and closer I'd want it for my conversion.
Mike - I didn't know they made the hatch until 89. Swell. I did see a turbo wagon that had SPFI and assumed they were all FI. Maybe some were also carbed? Then I did see a hardtop 4wd, too, and can't find mention of those anywhere.
