$25 later and I have a 2.5" catted "header"

Post by douglas vincent »

I have needed for some time now to get rid of the weak link in my exhaust, which is the connection from my front Y catalytic converter to the 2.5" back exhaust. I kept wanting to get some form of RS header and so on, but since there needs to be some custom welding done to get a newer header installed, the muffler shops wont touch it because they are effectively removing a catalytic converter which = $10,000 fine.

So instead, I just had them saws-all the rear of the cat off and install a 2.5" pipe and weld it into the system. No laws broken, no fine, $25, and 62% less exhaust restriction. Whoo!

The wagon sounds alot nicer too. And as for performance, well, nothing huge but it is there.

next stop, dyno test.

hey im interested in how you did this.

do you mean you removed the piping from behind cat ???

i assumed that your 2.5 system would bolt to the rear of your cat ??

so i guess what im asking is, what exactly did you have them remove

thanx

doesn't 62% less exhaust restriction in a cat, also mean it works 62% worse than it used to ? Less residence time=less contact with the catalyst

I suppose it won't matter as long as you aren't dyno tested for emissions. Do you have to pass the Enhanced test

The front cat has 2" or so piping coming in and out. (2 in , one out). The muffler shop can legally cut out the pipes leading into and out of the cat as long as they don't touch the cat material. So they simply cut out the 2" pipe leading out and stuck in a 2.5" pipe in and welded it in place.
