GEAR BOX HELP PLZ!!!!

Post by khunsa »

Hi I just brought a 1989 subaru legacy rs, and when i put it into 2nd gear it makes a knocking noise. im told it needs a new 2nd gear and an input shaft. Can i juts fix the 2nd gear and input shaft by just getting a new gearbox all together? Wot is the input shaft. Its not a major is it?

Cheers!
I love a good long legacy!

The input shaft is what the engine is attached to, by the clutch. It turns the output shaft with the gears that you select, and the output shaft turns the wheels.

Yes, if you want, you can solve your problem with another gearbox. Consider yourself very fortunate that you have a Subaru, since all new-gen Subaru transmissions from any Legacy, Impreza, Forester, or whatever will bolt right up to your engine with little to no modification.

just make sure the final drive ratio of the replacement gearbox is the same as the one that is in the car now.
