APEX Power Intake -> EJ20

Post by danct »

I know I am not in the right forum, but there is probably someone out there that can help me.
First of all I am brazilian and I drive a 98 Legacy GL. I do believe the GL designation never showed up in the US market.
Well, it is a true japanese Legacy with an EJ20 SOHC engine. That appears to be quite rare in the US too.
I was scouting out some parts for a cheap mod, intake-wise. First thing is mind was swapping the OEM air filter with a APEX Power Intake. Now, let's get to the questions:
1) Will it fit nicely?
2) Does it compromise the engine's health in any way in the long run?
3) Will I actually see any difference in a 115hp NA engine?

Thanks!

Welcome. Youre right, the EJ20 SOHC is a very rare motor, in fact I dont believe we ever got it in the US at all. To answer your q's

1) A'Pex makes very nice stuff, so yes it should fit nicely.
2)It doesnt compromise the engine's health, just keep it clean, or replace it when it gets dirty if its not washable.
3)You might see a very slight difference, some will tell you you will lose some low end, but you'll have to judge for yourself. It will be louder for sure.

Is the intake designed for the EJ20?

The one for the EJ20T will NOT work. I am not entirely familiar with the setup of the EJ20, so I don't know if the intake designed for the EJ25 or the EJ22 will work.

I KNOW the intake for the EJ20T will NOT work though, that's for sure.

As far as power? Not enough to justify the cost, most likely. But it'll be blingy and make cool noises!

I doubt you would notice anything with it. You'd be better off modding the intake box yourself.

I second that. Definitely more cost-effective and efficient.

And which intake box mod would prove more valuable?
I, mean, snorkus removal will probably make a car just a little louder (and meaner!) but won't provide any power benefit.
Maybe tinkering with the source of air, providing higher flow and cooler air to the engine.
The thing is I am quite a newbie when talking about mechanics.... I am pretty much learning all from my Legacy and Forums...

Enlarge the hole and put a piece of 2.5" pvc pipe (an elbow) in the the place of the snorkus. 2.5" should be enough since you have a n/a, or you might want to just do the 3". You could also put in a K&N airfilter or similiar.

Anyone got a picture of this assembly?
A lot of people mentioned the K&N having a lousy filtering rate. Ok I am not expecting paper filter-grade filtering, but it would be nice to know that it won't hurt my engine in the long run.
