Help!! Caliper/Pads Question
So, My front pads are off, new ones sitting in the box..
On the back of my old pads is this metal backing plate(although rusted to unuability)
My question... these didn't come with my new pads.
Are they needed?
Should they have came with my pads? or are they a sperate order?
as an aside... damn my pads in the front were done...
help plz

I've gone without the backing plates and not had a problem. I think all they do is supposedly reduce squeal. Did the pads come with new clips?

I haven't gotten squeal without either, but I'd recommend the permatex just the same. They didn't give you the clips either? Can you reuse your old clips?

The only pads I've gotten that had all the shims were the OEM subaru pads, and they cost $170 for a set of fronts & rears.

My EBCs were separated from their backing when I replaced them.

Napa Premium pads suck.
I wore through a set in under 10,000 miles. But I lived in the back roads of west virginia and drove them very hard, very often.

I've gone with shims and without, I've never noticed too much difference.
Phil - Where about's in WV did you used to live? My father grew up in Parkersburg and the Skidmore farm is in Gassaway.

Oh, indeed there are.
There was this one road, an on-camber, decreasing radius, downhill, high speed, tight sweeper fed by a nice tight left turn 100 feet before it. The turn was almost exactly like the turn at Laguna Seca.
You could hit it just right and rail the hell out of the turn. I was taking it at like 60 on RE92's without getting to far out of shape. Super sweet.

That's pretty good for RE92's. I always end up with my dad's 95 Altima when I'm headed up that way, it handles well but it's not as nimble and light on her feet as my Legacy.
One of my favorite roads is Rt. 219, esspecially going up and down Droop Mt. I still don't understand how they pave the roads with the bank angles that WV likes to use and that I consequently love. It's just too much fun taking those turns and feel more verticle load than lateral.
