94 Legacy Doesn't want to shift out of Park

Post by SldrDghtrDntCry »

Hey there, i've got a 94 Subaru Legacy that recently has decied to pick a fight with me and refuse to shift out of park! its been an on going battle for the last few months with it only recently becoming a major problem. usually all i need to do is a tap the breaks for a min or two and sometimes restart the car, however this last time that i went to use it, it refused to budge at all!

so i was just wondering if anyone out there had this same problem to and know what they did to go about fixing it? i'm a poor college student with some car repair expericance looking to fix it on my own as low cost as i can. Fairly sure it might have something to do with the Automatic Transmition wiring, took apart the shifter and found 2 wires *a white and black one* should i try resetting the connection on them or what??

thanks for the help!

Does it shift out of park easily when you press the override lever at the front of the gear selector surround?

there is a solenoid in there that has probably failed. depending on the VIN of your car and when it was made it could cost a fair amount of money to replace.

the one on my 95 failed so i zip tied it in the "open" position and disabled the safety switch. so the car can be shifted out of park w/out applying the brakes. not the safest solution so be carefull.
