Oregon Trail Rally-April 23rd/24th

Post by 555BCTurbo »

Ok...for you Oregonians and Washingtonians (?)

The Oregon Trail Prorally in Hillsboro is coming soon: April 23rd/24th

I was thinking it would kick ass a lot if we could get a small (or large) contingency of LegacyCentral Members out there. From what I gather there are a ton of Subarus in the race, which should be neat, and I will testify to the fact that watching rally in person is awesome!!

Hope to see you there!!

if you think you might want to meet up

It turns out I probably wont be making it. I have to drive to Baker City to go to a funeral/memorial on Saturday for an old friend you hasnt even died yet, but is expected to this week. Brain tumors suck.

Well i was there friday and saturday... Saturday I came home kinda early and I saw 2 turbo leggys heading for the service areas. One was red I think the other was maybe dark blue? I was in my rally car... They didn't even look over at me or anything lol. I guess my car just looks too boring on the outside still to be any different then any other n/a leggy. Oh well. :? I did see Jason Grahn and Douglas though.

Those two turbos wouldn't happen to be White and Winestone were they? Todd (-K-) and I were driving towards the service area and passed an Ice Blue N/A Legacy rally car. Was that you?!?! We were disappointed that we didn't see any Leggy-c's on the rally course.

So who exactly was driving the tree smacking white legacy? I talked to you guys a little at Les Shwab and you heard my supercharger as I left.

I saw a Legacy run Sun Nick, you should have come. :)

I must say it was like a Subaru show driving out there, we were kinda late because I went by RalliTEK (More cool info of that will be posted)

I had a great time but didn't end up meeting anyone from the board. I have a white Legacy but didn't do any tree smacking. Plus it's hard to miss with the gold STi five spokes.

I've met Barrett before, he seems like a nice guy, but he wants waaaaaaaaaaaay too much for his cars!!

Plus, from what I gather, he goes through a lot of transmissions

First of all,
Thanks to all of you that made it out to the rally. I noticed all of the BC turbo cars (and Matt's that we caged) and Doug's S/C wagon (you chatted w/ my codriver). It was really quite a rally weekend...

Just to set the record straight for everyone that didn't stay the whole weekend..

Friday was good for us, 3rd in PGT at PIR on rally tires w/ a small detour at the chicane..Pretty smooth sailing.

Saturday was our tree incident.. Just after the flying finish of Stage 1. Hairpin left at FF, corrected right, new diff (12kg STi) grabbed us hard right across road into tree +-20mph. Car still ran, but couldn't back out. Stuffed LF corner back +-2", down about 2". Pulled it far enough out to get a radiator back in, but the patch didn't hold, and a client just got my spare turbo radiator (damn)..Worked on the car until 4 am ( thanks to John in Gaston) to get it back in semi-proper shape for Sunday. Our stage time was good too, 2 seconds back of Paul Eklund, 3 seconds quicker than Bob Trinder, both in Open Imprezas. It could have been a good day, oh well. Many cars fell to attrition (+-25) that day, we were just the 2nd one out..

Sunday started out OK on the transit, but got crummy quickly when we lost first on the start of Stage 1. Just got the tranny rebuilt completely (got stuck in 3rd gear at Ramada)w/ the new diff, all new gears, syncros, bearings, seals, and a new stage 1 Exedy clutch and pressure plate. The new pressure plate is what did it in..It grabs a bit too hard, and the stock Legacy Turbo gears (WEAK) can't take the shock load. At the first acute I knew it was gone, so backed off for the rest of the stage. At any rate, we carried on to the next stage and let everyone go by. We still had 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. We caught the car ahead of us within 3/4 of a mile. At service, we decided to carry on until the tranny would go no more (needed rebuilt anyway) and practice the stage notes. We wound up stuck in 2nd gear , the best gear for most of stages, for the balance of the day. The worst part was the transit back at 6k rpms for 50 miles..But the car hung in there, and we wound up 1st in PGT for the day.

The moral of he story is this: In rally, anything can happen, and does..and to finish first, you have to first finish..
Even if you are tree smacking and tranny blastin'..LOL

Jason forgot to mention that the spindle broke and the wheel fell off the Golf he was in..and that was on the Tarmac on Friday. didn't you guys DNF on Saturday too?? What about Sunday, let's not go there..
For any of you that don't know us both well, we play like this sometimes..LOL But to his credit, in his other VW ride (Jetta), 1st or 2nd at Rim..

555BCTurbo,
OUCH! You seemed nice in person too.. Decent cars aren't cheap in K Falls either. Have sold cars to dealers from down there. If you did a full maintenance regime (TB, WP, Seals, tune up, brakes, fluids, filters, hoses, detailing, touch up, dents pulled, and the little stuff)and put a warranty on your cars, you'd probably ask more for your cars too. Also, I've been at this for about 12 years, so have seen more, and worked on more Subies than many guys out there, and have a good feel for what the difference is between a good car and a bad one (that I stay away from).

As far as the tranny thing goes, I have had some bad luck in the last couple of races with the turbo trannies. All last season I ran one tranny (w 310k on the gears) and had no probs with a stage 1 clutch and stock pressure plate. The HD pressure plate did it in. If you have had many (any) of these apart, you know they are weak...That's why in the rally world they are known as the "glass box", when they go, they shatter. The bits jam the shifter forks. In PGT you can't swap gears or trannies from other cars, that's why we are moving to Open class and Group F.

See you at Dryad!

Rally On!

Yeah, so? ;) At least I, well, hm. Yeah, I got nuthin.

3rd in open 2wd thanks to a damn flat on Messenger Flats whose road conditions were atrocious.
See you at Dryad!

We'll see about that. Guess anything is possible if your car doesn't break. or mine..

Got some "stuff" in store for the Leggy that should make it interesting.

Barrett,

I didn't mean any offense by the post. I didn't realize what you do to the cars you sell and the whole warranty thing, and all things considered, your prices aren't totally out of line. I wish I could have seen your car run at the rally, unfortunately I was only there for the Saturday afternoon.

Anyway...I hope there are no hard feelings and whatnot...

I do recommend you to my friends who are looking for Subies, btw, as you have some high quality/rare stuff!! :D

Hey Nick,

No hard feelings .. :) Just wanted to clear the air on the matter, I take a lot of pride in, and work hard at what I do.

Thanks for the referrals!:D
