tranny question

Post by andrewp724 »

i have an opportunity to buy a 90 legacy turbo that needs a tranny rebuild, or a new tranny. are there any other subaru trans' that will work on the car, or does anyone have any cheap solutions to fix the trans(know a good place to find a used one, etc.) thanks,

You sure it's not a 91 Turbo?

There was no turbo option in 1990...

Any trans will work really, just requires work. You can go with an RS tranny and convert to a cable clutch, or get a WRX tranny, and convert the rear end or the center diff.

Lots of options. If the price is right, go for it.

so all i have to change to use the WRX tranny is the center or rear diff? and that would be just using the center or rear diff out of a WRX also, right? thanks for the help!

I think what he means is you have to have a matched pair. Either a WRX center/rear diff. or a LT center/rear diff.

If you drop a WRX tranny in whole, you'd need to swap out the rear diff. If you switch out the WRX tranny's center diff for the LT one, you can use your current rear diff.

Where are you guys located in greenville?

I get up there for work on occasion. We have a natural gas compressor station along the duncan moore highway.

I helped him with that swap.

I think I saw you the other day in Mauldin, just after you bought it (or just when I found out he had sold it).

Small world, isn't it.......

haha, yeah he said his friend had seen me, and he said that the friend drove a red legacy, that's why i thought it must be you. i thinking about taking that extra WRX tranny shell he has and putting some RA gears in it for the Impreza, and then using the tranny out of the impreza for the legacy. but i have to convince my wife into letting me buy the RA gears, lol. i'm trying to change up the exhaust on it too, i appreciate the hush for what it is, but i just have to be able to hear the engine more.
