HELP! Installing 5spd AWD gearbox

Post by rally370 »

I must be lucky having a cable clutch as mine went back on without to much fuss.
Not so for two of my rally friends. One is a 91 Legacy Turbo and the other a 98 Impreza. They both have ened up with the same problem.

The legacy box was busted so needed to be changed.Everything went well until trying to pull the box away from the engine. It was stuck and they ended up unbolting the clutch/pressure plate to release it.
Impreza was purchased without a box.
For both cars the newish boxes were put back OK until they tried to make the clutch fork work. Both parties called me and said the fork was loose and was not conected to the release bearing.
So what did they do wrong? can it be fixed with the box on ? or do they have to remove the box and renew the clip that holds the release bearing to the pressure plate.
Like I said mine is a cable clutch so I have not done any work on a hydralic clutch.

Cheers

You have to install the clutch fork/pin AND the throw out bearing on the transmission before you mount it up to the engine.

The throw out bearing clips/snaps into the pressure plate after everything is connected.

Josh

I passed on the info. Both parties said they had done that.So maybe the bearing is not locating inside the pressure plate? I told them to take off the rubber boot covering the fork and see if the bearing is locating OK.
I'll let you know.

They're not doing something right. If they can remove the tranny without removing the pin that the clutch fork rides on then the throw out bearing is not clipping into the pressure plate.

As for why that's not happening....not sure.

Ok problem solved! both parties didn't have the clip fitted the the rear of the bearing. So box off clip on and then everything was OK.
