Hidden speaker box -- 1993 legacy wagon

Post by 93EJ22-Loosy »

I simply said to myself...what good will my future sleeper wagon be without a sleeper sound system???

Looking into my car all you see is an upgraded Alpine headunit. What you dont see is my 12 inch sub, 2 amps, all the fuse boxes or the upgraded 6.5" infinity kappa woofers.

actually it is just the carpet covering it for that reason. I thought about framing the carpet like you attach canvas to a frame to paint on. then attaching the frame with some sort of male/female type clip. for now it is just tucked in around the box which fits nice and tight. the angle of the back of the box can be seen if you follow the link to the extra pictures. It fits the seatback perfectly...

Nice design. Do you have any pics of the 6.5" woofers?

I'm confused. Is that sub "using" all that volume of that box? Is that box split in the middle for 2 subs and you just have the other side covered by the amps? I hope that is the case as one 12 inch sub would sound like ass in aprox. 3 cubic ft which is what a prefab box is for 2 12's. Depending on what jl sub that is you could go as low as 1cu ft and it would really pound hard and tight. if its a svc you should keep it between 1.2 to 1.5, if its dvc you could/should do half the volume.

oh just in case svc=single voice coil, dvc= double voice coil

oh yes, does look nice by the way

SVC first off. 1.58 cubic feet to be exact on the volume. I made the box myself with the help of my friend tet. its all one box for the 1 sub. the amps are mounted on the face. If you follow the link, you will see that there is a pic from behind the box. its a trapazoid with like a 3 to 5 inch top is all. if you look at the sub again, it is mounted on a square that sticks out. It is a spacer because the box was to shallow for the depth of the speaker. I promise for one sub and only 160 watts, it hits nice and tight. In fact, it is just enough to have the sound of a huge system without the rattle of all those civics with no dynamat around my town. (not hating on civics btw -- just the specific owners here)

Tiny unknown fact when measuring the exact same system in a sedan, there is a 3 dB gain with the hatch of the wagon. the acustics are one plus of the wagon.

nah, I did at first before I thought about it. I haven't seen anybody on this forum that is negative. Thats why I decided you werent trying to be. At the same time, I have been on some where that is the whole purpose. I really like everyones attitude that drives a subaru so far. Come to think of it, I think subaru's have this magical thing that make people friendly. I was in my 93 wagon L in the U.P. of Michigan (snowboarding...and yes my car loves it there :) like taking a dog for a walk) and I had to get gas at a station that only had full service...like half of New England. Anyway, the guy pumping the gas says, "hey, nice car! I made your bumper." I couldnt believe this guy worked in the factory in 93 and actually stamped my bumper.

Sorry for the anecdote, anywho, I appreciate the help. In my earlier days I blew a few voice coils and learned my lesson on the importance of box size. Hopefully our comments help those that are not in the know :)
