Oil Pressure??

Post by WRXdan »

What kinda oil pressure does the EJ22T pump put out?? I know it's a higher pressure pump, but it pegs my 100 psi gauge when cold. Once warm (thinner oil) it works with the gauge....but damn 100+ psi seems high??

I'd also like to know this. Our oil pumps are part of the timing assembly, just on the crank... correct? 100psi might be proper for cold oil...

The WRX runs anywhere from 75-90 (depending on who you talk to) after it's warmed up and in motion. So over 100 would not seem to far out. I just wonder how much more...

From the 92 FSM for the turbo models.

At 600 rpm:
Pressure is 14 psi
Flow is 4.9 us qt/min

At 5000 rpm:
Pressure is 43 psi
Flow is 12.42 us GAL/min

Relief valve is set for 85 psi.

The WRX is roughly identical

14 psi or more at 800 rpm
43 psi or more at 5,000 rpm

they don't give flow rates though...or so I didn't find them.

I found the same information on the 92 Legacy. (actually, it may be your reference Josh).

The information that I posted abv about the WRX was an average of what some ppl were seeing. I wonder why there is such a discrepancy between that and the manual. I also expected to see way higher pressure for the EJ22T.
Maybe the 2.2T oil pump can produce more pressure than the WRX, but loses it through the oil squirters?

You really don't want pressure higher then what they're doing. Any higher and you're going to blow out oil seals.

I'd probably say that the turbo legacy oil pump can flow more then the WRX one at the same rpm because the tleg has the oil squirters. But like I mentioned I couldn't find flow data for the WRX.

Yeah, that's the whole reason why I started tracking down this info. I was seeing quite a bit of oil in my intake that seemed to get by the catch can altogether. I was worried maybe that the oil was being blown out of the bearing seal in my turbo because of higher pressure. But as you said, it would make more sense to me that it just flows more.
