What should I do? HELP!

Post by legacy92ej22t »

OK, I've run into a problem. I've found, after some cross referencing, that all these clutches I've been finding for the EJ22T are in fact WRX clutches! The manufacturers are all saying that they will work but from what I know the WRX clutches are too big for our flywheel by 3mm. So it look like I need to switch to a WRX flywheel. :(

Here's my delima. With my power I really wanted (needed) to go to either a stage1 or 2 clutch but my price cap is around $500. SO should I try and find a OEM used WRX flywheel and have it resurfaced ect.. or should I get something like this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... ename=WDVW

It's a Exedy LW flywheel with OEM Exedy Clutch kit (stage 0). How do the OEM systems hold up, does anyone know?

The thing that worries me about trying to get a used flywheel and having it resurfaced ect is that the F&S is just over a month away and I need to have this in and broke in before that or I might have to cancel the F&S. What should I do?

I've got an OEM WRX clutch & PP with that exedy LW flywheel. It works fine. I wouldn't sweat things too much. Are you making mad p0w3r....so that you need the stage 1 or whatever?

Well, I have pretty much the same mods as Phil, so I assume that I'll be putting down around 250 ft lbs to the wheels so what's that to the flywheel, about 300 ft lbs? I eventually may be putting out a bit more then that too, if I get injectors and engine management.

I said get the used flywheel and a stage 1 clutch. However, I would look and see if you can't find a used Exedy flywheel or maybe a used flywheel from something like an STi.

Sti flywheel won't fit and it's pretty rare to find someone actually selling their LW Exedy.

If I get the Stage 1 it's just under $500, that doesn't leave enough for even a used Exedy LW FW. :(

Hmm...., I still think I'd get the stage 1 clutch and go with a stock flywheel although I'll be the first to admit though I'm no authority on clutch systems, but I'd think it'd be better to have the strong clutch and the heavy flywheel than a weak clutch and LW flywheel.

Option 3.

Save your money, buy a LW flywheel, and stage 1 clutch.

Lee- I agree that I probably need the burly clutch more then a LW FW.

You sure it wasn't a stage 0 dzx?

Josh- I can't wait. I'm throwing a meet that revolves around drag racing in just over a month. I need it in ASAP!

If you're making THE POWER, it makes more sense to get a oem clutch and flywheel than just clutch, as there's a fair chance you'll be taking that motor out again to replace the clutch.

HD clutch, oem pplate, oem flywheel, imo.

Seems like a light weight flywheel would encourage you to outshift the synchros.

OK guys, correct me if I'm wrong but the only difference between an OEM stage 0 setup and a stage 1 IS THE PRESSURE PLATE. The stage 1 Exedy is still just an organic clutch disc like the oem stage 0. It's the 2300 lb pressure plate that is the upgrade. Or am I totally wrong here?

clutch selection is a pain in the friggin ass. I'm still waiting for my clutch to come in.

Did you see these upgraded clutch options that don't require a WRX flywheel? (i.e. - they are for Legacy):

http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/viewpro ... Kits~.html

I ended up getting the WRX ACT 13.9 lb flywheel ($215) and a beefy organic WRX ACT clutch kit ($460 - sprung hub, solid disc, HD pressure plate, bearing, alignment tool, stickers I'm sure lol)

See, that the thing. If you get on those sites and then cross reference the listed clutches for our car with the WRX, they are the same kits. Exedy and CM ect.. all are saying that the wrx kits are a 100% fit with our cars but WE know this not to be true. :(

I need to order soon....

Ok, what about this. A SPEC stage 1 w/organic street disc and an ACT Street Light FW? This puts me about $100 over budget but it is the only way I can get a stage 1 and LW FW.

The thing that worries me about getting a used OEM rex FW is getting it shipped to me in time, resurfaced and installed all in time for the F&S.

$100 over budget isn't too bad. Eating ramen and pb&j sandwiches for a couple weeks will easily give you that extra 100. But that does sound like a decent comprimise, if you can consider it a comprimise. Your concerns about not getting a used FW all done in time for F&S is legit and understandable. Maybe you could put a donation jar out at F&S to cover that extra 100 :).

This combo will well worth the extra $100. Don't be greedy now, or you will regret later... (That's from my experience...)

I have no idea how much the lightweight flywheel helps out since before I had it, the car was an automatic.

It helps a lot. In 1st and 2nd gears car accelerates much quicker, plus shifting becomes smoother.

Well, it's over, it's done, no turning back now. I ordered the WRX SPEC stage 1 kit (organic street disc, 2600 lb PP) that is rated up to 419 ft lbs. I also ordered a WRX ACT Streetlite flywheel and a new Walbro 255 FP. I got the GSS341 w/install kit. So hopefully Subarina will be pulling in all her glory here shortly.

Oh and I can't wait for the F&S!

It will probably take you about a week to break in the new clutch and get used to LW flywheel. It was pretty tricky for me to drive my car from the shop's parking lot when they installed a brand new stock clutch and a LW flywheel. :)

Ya, I drove Phils car just after he got his Exedy stage 1 w/ Exedy FW and it was definitely different. I almost stalled the car when I first pulled out and the engagement was so much lower to the floor then I was used to. It was trippy.
