quick take offs in an auto?

Post by superlowsub »

Is there a way to get that quick 5 speed like take off in an auto or am I fighting an up hill battle?
Right now if I want to race at the lights I shift though the gears myself its not bad but it lacks the quick pull in 1st when you floor it. Is there a way to change that, maybe in the auto computer, or some thing I can do in my driving method?

Left foot brake it. Then save up for a rebuild.

Yep, that's all you can do, left foot brake and put a little power to it, not a lot but a little, then when you want to go, drop the brake and floor the gas. While this practice can be fun it isn't all to friendly to your driveline.

Werd. Stick your tongue in your tranny and libery-kiss your clutchpacks goodbye. :D
I've been doing this, thankfully, on a warrantied tranny, so if it gives me major shit before the 23rd here, it's going back to the tweakers I bought it from, and time for a 5sp swap.
The autos aren't bad, per se, it's just that once you wear the clutch packs down, you're screwed on launches.

Left foot brake as everyone's mentioned.

To help prolong tranny life, add an external tranny cooler, and run synthetic trans fluid.

Get a 5-speed, that'll give you 5-speed like launches.

get a high stall torq converter. 3k flash 4800 brake. youll have 3k launches all day long and 4800 when you left foot brake.

Multiplying the torque by 2.4 or multiplying the torque by 1, which do you think is going to launch harder? Combine that with a stall speed of almost 3 grand (almost full boost on his engine), or higher if you know how. But yeah, I guess dumping the clutch at 5 grand would be faster huh?

If you want a 5 speed launch don't brake stand just floor it.

You also have a weak torque converter in a stock automatic. How are you going to brake stand it up to 3k + with a stock setup?

You can launch at any RPM with a 5-speed, which is espically helpful when you start modding. I make 251lb-ft at 3200RPM, you think a stock automatic tranny would be able to handle that? I don't think so.

I PROMISE that if you launch a 5-speed, and if you just floor an automatic, the 5-speed is going to get off the line faster. If you properly launch a 5-speed compared to a stock automatic, you'll pull a quicker 60' in the manual transmission.

Remember, Jasons best ET was in the 14 second range and he has similar mods to me. Judging by street performance, I'm well in the 13's, and that'll be verified in a month or so.

Aren't the 5-speeds a 50/50 power split and the 4EATs like 80/20 or something. I would think that would have some affect on launching-at least in the rain.

Why did you swap from an auto to a 5-speed then? You ALWAYS herald the automatic transmission as being next to jesus, your almost as bad as Ciper was. So why did you swap, Mr. Automatic?

Autos CAN outlaunch 5-speeds, but a stock automatic Legacy isn't gonna out-launch a stock 5-speed legacy. At the very closest, they will be even.

Prove me wrong.

remember though when i made my run the track was wet with puddles, my tires were dirty and have no grip. im not nessairly trying to make excuses so im going to go to the track again soon.

stock auto will not out launch a 5 speed, your right about that but i never said stock, my sugestion was to get a high stall rebuild where they rebuild your tc to flash stall at 3k and brake stall at 4800 rpm. yes this is full boost on these cars and thats exactly the point. driveablity is maintained. and if you want to go higher on the stall yes the driveablity will go down but if you take the lockup feature off than driveabilty is also then sustained.

the mod is the same thing protorq does but you can have a local shop do it. many great reviews have come up on nasioc and evade is using a 4eat and he is running 11.xx now. so id say you can get a auto to launch like a mt but it wont be a stock at. oh and rigoli used a powerglide for one of their cars.

I was talking stock for stock, and that's what it sounded like Hardy was talking about.

Modded, Auto's will walk manuals all day long. I never said they wouldn't.

Thanks for clarifying that for me :)

I would imagine they would get a good launch but loose power the rest of the way due to being a heater box and more inefficient than a manual.

This is true. I need to get a tranny cooler in asap. I'm tired of smelling hot tranny every time I turn on the vents...

But, this will be more than made up for by the full throttle quick shifts the (modified) auto can make, not to mention at least one less shift. There is a reason the 2 speed Powerglide is the king of the strip.

Gary

P.S. I'm not a big fan of autos, I dont drag race and for daily driving a manual is just a lot more fun.
No matter how broke I am... I always seem to find two cents.

heat is a huge issue with the autos. you really need to have a cooler for high stall application. in my case ill be using 2 12x5 coolers one on each side of the stock cooler. but thats not for a while.
