FWD MT -> AWD MT

Post by xtalman »

Okay, I've been inspired by all you Legacy gurus, and was considering converting my '93 FWD M/T Legacy to AWD just for the educational aspect of it. However, reading through the past messages, it looks like I'd still have to change out the 5MT from my FWD Subaru to a 5MT from an AWD Subaru. Is that correct?

Yes. The gear ratios on the FWD aren't the same as the AWD so your rear diffs for the standard AWD wouldn't work. Also the FWD doesn't have an output to send power to the back (I'm fairly sure on this). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

i believe you also need to have an AWD gas tank, rear end mounting bracket, and will also have to change the rear hubs as the hubs in there now have the strut mounted in the center of the hub, as the AWD they are off set to allow the rear drive shafts to pass through.
