WRX hydro clutch swap and flywheel Q's

Post by subafreak »

Has anyone swap swapped to the much simpler WRX clutch master and slave? Well I just did, I got a deal on the parts and I had used my stock slave in an SVX conversion many years ago so I needed one anyway. I don't know why the Legacy used such a complex munti peice hydro assembly, but it looks alot less cluttered with the WRX one.

Also I accuired an ATC streetlight WRX flywheel, are they the same as the Turbo Legacy ones? I think their clutches have the same part number for WRX and Turbo Leg? I'm using an ATC clutch already.

WRX clutch/flywheel IIRC are 3mm larger in diameter than the stock T-leg pieces... even though many places list them as the same application.

How's the WRX master/slave workin out for ya?

Even with the stock hydraulics you can eliminate most of the complexity by removing the damper and replacing it all with a single hose from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder.

So the WRX master cylinder bolts right in, though? That's cool. It's shaped differently, though, right? Cuz you could use a WRX master cylinder with a Legacy Turbo slave cylinder in order to get a little longer throw at the clutch fork. That'd be cool.

Yeah, it's bolts right in. The braket that holds the hard line even lines right up with the pre threaded hole under the dog-bone mount. Like it belongs there. 8)

I don't have the motor back in yet but I'm sure it will work OK when I do.

So is that 3mm gonna make a huge difference or can I still use the WRX flywheel? It's also the only flywheel I have for the turbo so I hope it will work. :?

Yes it will work. The WRX flywheel has a little bit bigger dia contact area for the bigger WRX clutch. I think it's 5mm or something.
With the WRX flywheel you can use a Turbo Legacy/GC clutch or the WRX clutch and pressure plate.

Yeah, I figured that out. I got the motor in last night and the clutch feels good, well as far as just pushing the pedal.

Now I need to figure out what starter I need?

I lost way to much stuff.

Plus I need to mount and plumb the FMIC and turbo
