VF-30
Hey Anyone have any experience with the VF-30, I have a line on one that is very cheap and I'm going to jump on it. I realize I'll need to change the intake and clock it 90 degrees, but I'm wondering about performance. I'm pretty stoked about this, by the way if this works out, my my VF-8 with a slanted JDM v2sti intercooler will be up for grabs.

Well I know your VF-8 put out 240-250CHP stock....
The VF-30 is newer, better spool and more efficient I would guess.
Not talking you out of it but do you think you have hit the max on your VF-8? Could that money go for a FMIC maybe?
Go do a search on the RSLiberty board, I remember they had a thread that "ranked" turbos. They put them in order and whatnot.

I think we run the VF30 on my legacy rally car. if this is the big impreza one, then it is the same, they suffer big turbo lag, have a good top end, but not a lot below 3500 - 4000rpm. we run anti-lag which sort of solves it, but even then if you drop below it takes a bit to get the old bus going again.

how in the bloody hell do you have that much lag on a vf3x. seriously, the slowest ones spool faster than that.
either way the vf22 is the largest vf and the 16g is bigger than that and it doesnt even spool that slow

I made peak torque at 3200RPM and my friend's wrx made less torque at the same boost, at 3600RPM.

Rebuild it. I'd say you could get it done a lot cheaper than getting a new turbo. The crack may be fixable, if not I think a new exhaust housing is in the $200-$250 range.
Just how much shaft play is there? There will be some play in it. The fact he gave you your money back is a bad sign.....
If you don't want to mess with it sell it cheap to someone like me who will try to hybrid it or repair it.

Their is enough shaft play that when you spin it the exhast blades hit the side of the metal , it's hasn't been run like this, but it's not good, I'm going to ship it to Deadbolt, and let them see what they can do with it, if they say it's junk, then it's yours -k-

Well I hope it isn't too much to fix and Deadbolt seems like a good company to deal with.
How bad is the exhaust housing cracked? I've pulled enough turbos that were cracked and ran fine I'd think it would take a big one to be terminal.
If it isn't worth fixing I'll find a good home for some of the parts, thanks.

Hmmm,
I wonder if that is my old VF-30. That thing has been passed around a bit since my buddy originally blew it up. Have you got any pics of it? If for some crazy reason it is the same turbo, I sent pics to Deadbolt at one point, and they quoted me $275 to repair and rebuild it.
Anyways, a VF-30 won't really be an upgrade from a VF-8. The VF-8 is real similar to the VF-23, and has the huge P-20 exhaust housing. The Vf-30 has a p-18, which is slightly smaller. For reference, our vf10/11's use a P-15 housing. The VF-30 does have a slightly larger compressor housing, but not enough to make up the difference on the exhaust end of things...
The advantage of the VF-30 is it's spool up. It will be fully spooled by less than 3000rpm. Part of that is the size, but a major part of that is the newer bearing design than the vf-8. Regardless, it just doesn't push enough air to make serious power out of 2.2l. The VF-8 is going to be a better turbo that will hold boost longer and harder up top.
In closing, I am surprised to see all this interest in buying this VF-8. I was selling one about the time this thread went up, and not very many people expressed interest...

Hey Matt, I'd laugh my ass off it this was your old turbo, Anyway, It was free to me, I've got an exhaust housing on it's way for $30 and I'm going to get the seals redone, then sell it to someone on Nasioc for a few $$. I just picked myself up a TD05 from England from a 95 WRX. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1
So, essentially I'm hoping to get enough from the vf30 to pay for the td05.
