OEM looking rear deflector for the 92 Legacy wagon?

Post by gnuman »

Title says it all, really. Well where to find one might be good if this does exist. I'm looking for the one that deflects air from the roof down the back o fthe rear hatch

Does this mean that no one has one of these for sale? I was hoping for an OEM look, but it seems that I have to go with the cheap looking aftermarket one I found on a totaled wagon. . .
unless someone can come up with something better?

They're very rare - not like the early GLs that had them with the roof racks. I've only seen a couple of them. If you wanted a rear spoiler I heard the Suzuki Swift GTI's fits perfect, but I'm not sure how willing I am to send away for one from a JY on the guy's word.

OK, what is the difference in airflow between the spoiler and the deflector? I want something that will send air down into that vacume area created by the shape of the car at speed. . .

The deflector just tries to keep the rear window clear and I think has a negligible effect in terms of aero performance besides slight drag as though it's angled upwards to the front, the angle of attack would be too high (and possibly the aerofoil crossection wrong) to create lift. The spoiler should try to even out the turbulent air tumbling off the roof.

A spoiler is designed to create downforce. While it will move some air downwards it won't be enough to keep your back window clear. The deflector is shaped to direct the air right down the back side and alleviate some of the suction in the back. I've seen a lot of the older wagons but haven't seen one with a deflector.

We parted out a car at the yard I work for (they do transplants of Subie engines from totaled cars into other vehicles). it had a deflector on it so I grabbed it and put it on my car. I also got a few replacement parts for some broken plastic on the inside. . .
Either it is helping with the gas milage, or my odometer is going out. . .

I'll post pics when I'm finished painting her. She is three colors right now: Ice Blue (her original color), some sort of burgundy (donor doors and ligtgate) and "bondo". . .

I plan on repainting her when we get back from the road trip I'm taking this summer. I will actually be in your area in mid July if all goes well. . .

Spoiler - spoils the flow of air running along surface of car, and reduces drag - usually doesnt have a gap between spoiler and the mani body of the car. Also smaller ones are just a sharpish lip

Wing - sits up in airflow - and provides a downforce by using an inverted airfoil. *think rice aluminium gt wings*

the legacy wagons do have an OEM type spoiler available.

The story that i heard from a wrecker is that it was a "Official Subaru aftermarket part", but not offered as a factory option (hence so few of them)

i cant find a picture at the moment - will post when i get home.

that wouldnt provide much, if any downforce. if anything - that would help to lift the back end.

the only real reason that would be on would be to keep the back window clear. some isuzu irmishers come with those factory

It keeps the rear window very clear of dust and such.

Wagons don't need extra downforce. Think of the rear half of the car as a big spoiler.

That pic looks a lot like the one I got. Perhaps it is the "Official" one. Cool. Thanks for the responses.
