Torque converter noise.......

Post by nsantos23 »

Hello Guys and girls

Recently my uncle and I went out to buy himself a car, so we found this 91 legacy fwd auto, new tranny, 122k miles on the clock, running perfectly. we paid for it and drove home. he let the car sit for a week then he chaned all the fluids and drove the car home. he called me saturday saying that there was a noise coming from the engine. well sunday he came back to my house and i took a look at it. well it sounds like there is something bouncing around inside the torque converter, it almost sounds like a bolt is bouncing around, sometimes the noise is gone soemtimes is there and its loud, the tranny does not slip or anythiing, it shifts fine. what could it be?

Thanks for your help

Does the noise change when it is PARK as opposed to putting it in DRIVE with the brake on?

Have you checked to be sure that all 4 flexplate bolts are installed? it may be that someone was sloppy and left one loose, and it backed out and is now bouncing around in there. . .

the bottom of the trans to motor union is open so it would have probably fallen out if it was in there. Are you sure its not some lifter knock?

A piece of the guts in my front cat broke loose and made a similar sound, I thought it was the tranny. I had a friend go under the car to listen while I shifted from PARK to DRIVE, the sound went away when he pushed on the cat. The car viberated more in drive with the bake depressed than when it was in park. See if the sound is comeing from the cat.

I have a front diff off a 94 turbo, 3.90. If this will fit on your FWD come and get it. I don't see how the drive ratio would matter, does anyone know for sure if it will bolt up? If you just change the diff than you can still use the "new" trans.
