Building an Ej22T Stroker or direct build of EJ22t
Well it just so happens I have an extra Ej22t lieing around and would like to make a nice beefy engine to slap into my current turbo Legacy. I have heard about the strokers but haven't heard seen much feedback as to how everyone liked it on the turbo motor. I know you need a phase 1SOHC crank for this, I believe you use the connecting rods as well, and use the stock pistons and heads from the EJ22T. Does anyone make parts specifically for this application? with these internals are you still capable of 30 + pounds on these internals? whats the approx cost of doing a stroker?

IMO,
Money is better spend on improving the heads and replacing those than on the bottom end...

TurboXS made 498whp with EJ20 heads on an EJ257 block. Only head mod was cams.
That was a cool car.
The internals of our engines are fully capable of 30psi, assuming you have the razor sharp tuning skill to keep the engine from exploding, and making power. Oh, and assuming you can keep the heads on the engine, and can find some 500 octane gas to tune it with. 30psi is a LOT of pressure. That's 44.7psi of absolute pressure being crammed into a space slightly larger than a 24oz beer can.
I don't know how you'd be able to spool any turbo efficient at 30psi in the given 6500RPM of breathing room, so head work, including a very built valve train would helpful.
I'd rather have the heads from a JDM V7 Spec-C. But I don't have the several thousand dollars to buy them.

30+psi? WTF needs to run that much boost?
The ej22t internals ARE strong, but, like any other mechanical system, they've got limits.
Phil, you're right on the built valvetrain part. Can the EJ22t valves be sodium-filled, as well?

I think if you need the power 30 psi would yield, I suggest maybe Crawford's 2.8 liter engine and running less boost - you'd have the same power with better driveability from the larger displacement and with the extensive tuning and rebuilding required of the 2.2, it may even be cheaper.

eric at frantic four told me about this. he said all i needed was a 2.5 RS crankshaft and rods i think it was? he made it sound so simple tho. i was thinking of going this route if i was going to rebuild the ej22t. thats still lingering in my head if i should or not...

My understanding is that to run the 2.5 crank you need to machine the top bracing in the crankcase to give clearance to the piston skirts that will now drop farther down in the cylinder. However, I am not 100% on this either.
When I way better heads, I mean EJ251, EJ20G or EJ205 heads. Making EJ257 heads work would be a bitch. The AVCS and totally difference cam gears with very different sensors present quite a challenge. Hat's off to you if you make it work. Everything else is bolt on with a new manifold and injectors.
As for max psi on the stock EJ22T, how soon people forget. Xephyr ran the EJ22T with EJ251 heads for a couple years at 25+psi as a daily driver and 30+ when he went to the track. In that form he was putting 20-25k mi on the engine a year, and ran two trouble free years that way. When he went to the EJ257 bottom end, he sold the whole longblock. That longblock continues to see service to this day in another car that is running around 20psi on the street and 25psi at the strip...

i have a solution to that. in fact i was given a ride in a axis 2.4 motor which is a stroked 22t block with forged internals with a 4eat that stalls 4800 rpm that has a turbo that will peak at 40 psi but only tuned for 15 at the moment and wow. full spool at 3500 rpm. id highly recomdned the stroker with heads and this turbo combo.I don't know how you'd be able to spool any turbo efficient at 30psi in the given 6500RPM of breathing room
if you could just imagine hearing nothing but the sound of an compressed air hose fully opened times 50 comming out of your exhaust pipe and at only 15psi.

Holset HX35 turbo.
It's a monster of a turbo. It will spool up just fine. It uses the Garret flange so you will have to make a new up-pipe. I'd put an external wastgate on it, the wastgate it comes with is 32psi I think. Did I mention you can pick one up for around $250 ?
I don't think I'll play with the heads, maybe someday but I'm sure I can get the power I want with the stock heads. They are not so bad, maybe better cams. I've seen a lot of HP flow through worse heads than the stock EJ22T's.

He was running completely stock internals on a new Ej22T block that he bought from the dealership!Project_Legacy wrote:he wasnt running stock internals though was he? i figure, if i was going to rebuild the ej22t block, id stroke it and put forged pistons and newer rods in it.

Louis (MadWRX) still has his stock set sitting around. He has a FS thread on awdpirates. He wants $250 for them...dzx wrote:Thanks for elaborating on that matt, I knew i had read that somewhere but couldnt find it again.
I'm thinking of picking up a pair of wrx heads in the near future since i should have the t3/t4 by this time next week.
