eBay flywheel... will it work?

im not sure if this will work or not on my 1990 N/A Legacy Sedan. i think it will but i want a second or third opinion on it. plus, would it be a big gain? i would believe it will be. what do you guys think? any help would be great. thanks!

From a manufacturers standpoint, don't buy off ebay. any warranty or tech you MAY have if you buy retail will go right down the drian.

Actually, having been there a few times, they're closer to most of Tacoma's hookers.

hahaha yea ive been there. so i should ask them? i'm actually not thinking about getting a lightweight flywheel for the legacy anymore. maybe when i get an impreza for my monster motor. i just dont have that extra money. and ive been hearing that it isnt worth it. anyway, thanks for the replies guys.

For the record, that particular ACT streetlite flywheel is more expensive than it was brand spankin' new at Subaru Store.com - I got mine for $215.

And yes I love it so far. Been in for less than a week and my turbo thanks me every time it spools up!

I'll second that.....it takes a lot more finesse and throttle work with the lw flywheel

So maybe something light, but not THAT light? What's a good weight? 9, 10, 14 lbs? Who's running what, and what are the complaints? There has to be a happy medium in here somewhere...

I'm running the ACT Streetlite, 13.9 lbs IIRC. It does take a little more skill to launch and heel-toe ect.. Drivability is still good but definitely different then OEM. You have to pay attention a lot more and think about your revs.

How so? You revv quicker as a result of less rotational mass, correct? What about under load, though? Does it make the car 'feel' faster?

If you shift into the next gear at low rpm the car kinda bogs. Anything under 2k rpm is gutless. More so then when OEM.

Besides that it's just a lot different then OEM. If you do a nice leisurely shift the revs drop too fast and you'll have to blurp the throttle to rev match before engaging the next gear. When downshifting you must do it much quicker then when on an OEM flywheel. It's not hard by any means, it just takes some getting used to.

In terms of the butt dyno, I don't know. My car's running really inconsistant ever since the new engine went in, so it's kinda hard to tell. When it runs good it seems faster though.

I've got the 14lb exedy wrx flywheel. My comments are pretty much the same as matt's.

It's just different.....

I'll agree with that... it's different. 13.9lb ACT Streetlite flywheel, cheapest at $215. I wonder how the 9 lb ACT Prolite holds up? It's like $240 or so.

couldnt you also get the stock flywheel and have a machine shop balance it and make it lighter? i heard of that somewhere. make it like 17 or 20 pounds or somethin. so that subaru store.com still has em? and is that 215$ with shipping or without? this thing is like borderline on my mind whether i want to get it or not.

I was toying with the idea of having someone lighten/balance my flywheel instead of getting a LW.... but then again, thats how my clutch system got screwed up. I paid to have my clutch replaced and flywheel lightened and what did he do? Used a hand air buffer to remove the glaze just like it was a brake rotor. Made my flywheel uneven as hell. Caused this whole mess I'm in right now.

The moral of the story: you can't trust someone else's work. If you're not bringing your flywheel to a machine shop your damn self to make sure it's lightened and balanced (not to mention balanced PROPERLY... that is, it better be a damn good machine shop). The LW flywheel at $215 + shipping just is a better deal in my mind than trusting someone else's work again. Every time someone other than me works on my car, I've got problems. F that noise.
