automatic posotive shift.
i have a 4eat in my ss and my mom has a 97l that also has a 4eat. my trans always shifts up automaticly if you have it in 1 and shifts down as you slow down again automaticly. yet in the 97 L the you have to shift it from 1 and you have to down shift it if you want a lower gear, so for example if you go from 1 to 2 it will stay in 2 until you shift up to 3 and if you want 2 again all you have to do is pull it down. but in my car if i have it in 1 it will go all the way to 4 without my help and it will shift down as soon as i let go of the gas until it gets back to 1.
is there any way to make my trans do what the 97l does. it would really help with autox's

So, you car will upshift before redline when it's in 1st? If not, I don't really see the problem unless you like banging off the rev limiter. Just switch between 1st and 2nd and use the manual mode button if you don't want it to downshift to 1st.
In 95 the 4eat changed from an upshift logic to a fuel cut logic, so, umm, maybe with the TCU from a newer Subaru?

Yeah that's all in the TCU. Personally I find the version that doesn't shift at redline to be a downgrade. Why you would want to bounce off the rev limiter is beyond me, but if it's just for auto-x why not adjust your driving method?

i dont know, i just like it better.
also i discovered something driving around last night and today. when i put it in 1 it doesnt always start in 1. it starts in second gear. the boost helps that alot but its anoying because i have no power until i get to 25mph. im going dragracing on friday and its gonna suck if i cant get out of the hole.

Sounds like you're having problems with the Manual mode.

i didnt actualy have it in manual mode when it started in second when i had slected frist. i didnt think that thats what the purpose of manual mode was anyway. i thought it was for something else.
i have a bigger turbo so i dont really notice it until i turn up the boost and it doesnt smack me in the head. also it doesnt rev as fast and it goes up above 40 before it shifts

If you put it in 1st, it should start in 1st and stay there until redline (some literature I've read says it will shift at 6100 in manual mode, but I think mine goes to redline). Also, in manual mode 1st, the center diff will give 50:50 split. In manual mode, when in 2nd, the car will start in 2nd and stay there until redline. In 3rd manual mode, it will start in 2nd, and almost immediately shift to 3rd, staying there until redline. I use it all the time when I'm going 60 or so and want to go WOT, so the car doesn't shift down to 2nd.
One of these days I'll finish my write-up which summarizes 3 or 4 endwrench articles on the 4eat.
With a 3.9 F.D., 1st is good for about 35-40 I think (I'm not usually paying attention to the speedo when I redline in 1st), 2nd gets to about 70, and 3rd goes to 110.

What I meant jason, was that there was something wrong with the manual mode, not that you were pressing it. Now that I think about it, it could be a lot of different things.
The center differential doesn't lock in normal operation. When it does you know it. The power distribution may go to 50:50, but the center definatly doesn't lock.

funny thing was that i tried using the manual button and it did exactly what jamal said. i started out in first, pull as hard as hell, bumped it into 3 and it went to second for 1/2 a second and went stright to third at wot. weird.
how do you know if center diff is locked

Not "locked," but, to quote the article, employing "a more aggresive AWD map," whatever that means. It does it when the selector is in 1st (not just manual mode). I have a hard time noticing any delay anyway unless I'm on ice or snow.azn2nr wrote:funny thing was that i tried using the manual button and it did exactly what jamal said. i started out in first, pull as hard as hell, bumped it into 3 and it went to second for 1/2 a second and went stright to third at wot. weird.

when the gear selector is in the 1st position, the AWD is more or less 50/50.
