My 95 legacy sedan has traction control system on it. I was told that when you first start to drive it makes a crunching noise and that is just the tcs turning on. Is this right? I do have that crunching noise only when i first start driving and then it goes away. It only last for a split second and wont happen again unless i shut the car off, turn it back on and start driving again. Normal?

The only Subaru traction control I thought existed was VDC on the H6 wagon. I guess you do learn something new everyday.

I was also unaware that TCS was an option for anything but the VCD model Subaru's (there was an H6 VDC Sedan, and the VDC Wagon).

95 FWD Legacies had it as an option.
As you may have guessed, Euphman06, not many of us here know much about your car... we're generally 1st-generation Legacy folk.
It seems believable that the traction control system would check itself when the car first starts to move, and that it would manifest itself as the pumps/solenoids/etc activating for a second or two. That's what the ABS system does, too. But I can't tell you whether or not it's supposed to sound like crunching.

Yeah, thats a scary noise for the factory to associate with "normal" operation of the vehicle.
Just brings me back to when I had my '99 Saturn SC2, brand new, and it still consumed 2 qts of oil per 3000 miles. When I inquired about it at the dealership, they told me it was normal. It's always so good to know that your car company manufactured your engine with such tight tolerances and precision that ... that... that it eats about half of its oil during normal operation. Wow.

Euphman06 - This may be a silly question, but does the crunching sound bad? Or does it sound like it could really just be pumps and solenoids and whatnot activating?
Chris - Yeah, my ex's SL2 burned more oil than fuel it seemed. Maybe at Saturn piston rings are an optional dealer-installed accessory or something...
