TD05 / 16g? TD06 / 18g? Do they all fit?

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

TD05 / 16g? TD06 / 18g? Do they all fit?

Post by free5ty1e »

Just perusing deadbolt enterprises merchandise for sale... they seem to have the TD05-16g all customized for the USDM 90-94 Legacy (rotated mount, moved wastegate actuator, etc), which as I understand it will go in easiest with the least amount of physical modification - which sounds good to me. But I notice they also work with the 18g and larger turbos... on the TD06 cartridge, too.

Anybody familiar with the differences between the TD06 and TD05 cartridges? I'm wondering if, when the time comes, I should shell out the few extra hundred bucks to get a TD06-18g and see if they can make it Legacy-friendly? Or should I just stick with what we know works, and get a monster-ported TD05-16g with at least the turbine housing coated...? Is it possible to fit an 18g in the Legacy or is it way more work than just going to the rotated-mount 16g? Is it even worth considering...?

Why not a compromise? They have a super 16g which is just a hair below the 18g, with the 16's smaller wheel. And it will fit their modified housing for us.

You can always go with the bigger turbo, but then you have more modifications with the inlet, outlet, and lines. But if you are going FMIC, and doing more mods, you only have to worry about the room around the turbo. But how much power are you looking for?

And if you are going that big, don't forget the fuel and computer management issues also.

The best way might be to just email Deadbolt Enterprises and find out. Jerry (the owner) has owned multiple Legacy Turbos (and he and Dale installed the 16G in my '91SS while it was in Dale's shop (i.e. Boxer4Racing)), so he should definitely know what will fit (or what can be modified to fit, if it doesn't normally).

The super 16g sounds like a good compromise, just wondering about our actual turbo options...

Hmm.. how much power do I want? That's a good question.

I want to be able to break all 4 wheels loose on demand. I'll need all three differentials upgraded, and probably a few other things.....

I've always wanted to have performance-related traction problems in an AWD vehicle.

So, in answer to your question, I want assloads of power. Many assloads.

Neat... thats what I wanted to know. I did email Deadbolt with some questions but still haven't heard back yet. I knew this board would be faster with the answers lol

So basically, since I already have gone FMIC, I can actually decide to purchase one of them superzilla badboys with a 90* inlet slapped on it if I want. That's nice to know. I like options.

Turbos sure can be expensive new... but then again, my only other option is to find a TD05 from a WRX used somewhere, buy a super 16g wheel and td05 rebuild kit, then if I want coating and porting I ship it off to Deadbolt. I'm thinking I may actually save up for a new turbo.

The most expensive single mod for my Legacy has been the $500 custom exhaust (the guy let me get away with no cats). Just below that was the ACT clutch kit at $440. I have found rebuilt wrx 16g turbos overseas from the UK for around $500-$600, but by the time I customize the turbo with a larger wheel, coating, and porting (not to mention shipping) - I may as well have just selected a custom set of options from Deadbolt and have them take care of everything at once... I'll just have to save up for it again, like I had to for the exhaust and the clutch.

Hopefully by then I have some larger injectors and a piggyback fuel management system to help make use of that turbo...

It would seem that since even the 20g compressor side can be hybrid with the TD05 turbine, and it spools faster than the TD06 turbine.... and I don't think I'll need more than 640 CFM on the Legacy..... I'll stick with the TD05 turbine/center.

http://www.boostplanet.com/compressorflow.htm

The next step up in compressor size requires the TD06 turbine, and enters the ridiculous SuperZilla range. Since our cars aren't at their peak in those high RPMs, going so far as to get a SuperZilla would be a bit much IMHO.

I will probably get the TD05 water-cooled 'Zilla (monster ported, both sides coated) with the 20g compressor side. I believe this is the compromise between turbo lag and performance potential that I will be happiest with.

This will also most likely take a few months to save up for. In the meantime... I need some inexpensive high-flow injectors to put in either my rails or this set of post-facelift NA rails I've got here, for LegaCU tuning experiments with pushing my little VF-11/T-bird hybrid turbo way past it's efficient range.
