225/45/17's will NOT FIT OUR CARS WITHOUT MODIFICATION

Post by LaureltheQueen »

So don't try it. I was trying to come up with a good tire solution, when I decided I'd try out my roommate's 17" wheels with an offset of 50. They have stock STi re070's on them. We got them on, and bolted up, and the car on the ground. They looked fucking sick, but alas, there was trouble. Even with my whitelines and agx's, I get far too much body roll for such wide tires to work as can be evidenced in exhibit A. Rolling the fenders is not an option, unfortunately. It just wouldn't do enough. Then you say "what about something with a milder offset?" well, the problem with that is, when we took them back off my car,my rear strut had a big clean spot on it from where the tire rubbed when I jumped on the car. So, sad as it may be, it won't work.

I have photos I'll post in a little while. :)

Doesn't Phil have 225s?

It looks like I can fit 215s pretty easily with my new struts. I'd be tempted to try someone's 225s.

more negative camber!

What was the sidewall height of the tires you test fit?

That's strange considering there's probably at least 5 members running them. ;)

i don't know if they're magic, but there was large amounts of rubbing for me.

they were 225/45/17s

These were meaty looking, but with any kind of cornering would rub like nobody's business

May want to edit your subject to reflect the true nature of the topic.. "225's may not fit without modification" or something of that nature sounds appropriate.

I ran 225/45/16s for over a year, but on a very stiff suspension with a fair amount of negative camber. There was some rubbing on the fenders, usually going up driveways with the wheel turned, but i can't say it was a problem when i was autocrossing, which i was doing a lot at the time.

Oh, and RE070 225s are very wide for 225s. I was running MY04 STI wheels/tires on my 01 RS, and I couldn't get them to stop rubbing for the life of me. The fenders are rolled to the limit, and fiddling with the camber won't help ( I've tried). I'm sure if I swapped to a true coilover setup, I could have kept them from rubbing on the struts, but I sold the wheels.

Good luck!

I am currently running 225/45/17 RE070's (which measure closer to 235), on 17x7.5" ET48 wheels, and don't rub.

I don't rub the struts or the fenders.

For 225s, RE070s have one of the widest sections out there. Hoosiers are the same way, I hear.

Goes to show that not all cars, even when same make/model/year are created equal.
