Guess what happened to me today? UPDATE

Post by sullione »

My frickin' crank pulley came off...AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! This is the second time this has happened to me. I even torque it to 100 ft lbs and I have sealant on the dang threads. Why did this happen again. I'm mulling my options. I'm thinking ej20 swap. Anybody know where I can find one?

EJ20T? Check NASIOC. They go up over there quite a bit.

I'd just get a new bolt and crank pully from the junkyard.

I'm not sure if I can repair it this time. I haven't really looked at the damage but when it happened the first time, there was damage done to the crank and keyway. I'll keep checking NASIOC.

I have a crank, but it may be cheaper to just swap a whole motor if your crank is junk.

Yeah, it'll probably be cheaper to swap engines. Besides, it's something that I've been considering.

if there was oil or PB blaster or similar on the female or male threads after removing the pulley bolt, then any thread locker will be redered useless.

the only way to get the female threads clean is to bathe them in liberal amounts of brake cleaner shot with the little red spray tube, and let it run out of the hole, then repeat about 5 times and shoot it out with compressed air

does a new, original factory bolt have a thread locker strip on it ? I've never seen one

clean threads and red thread locker is just about infallible in my experience, if everything fits tight and straight

Thanks Professor, that may be what caused my problem. When I get a chance, I'll take a look at the damage and report back.

A preliminary looks shows that there's not much damage...if any. I didn't take the car apart at all but the main pulley still fits onto the crank with very little movement and the key is still there. I will still replace the key but I was wondering if there is anything else I should look for? Should I replace the bolt even though there doesn't appear to be any damage? Why would the bolt come loose if everything turns in the same direction?

torque that bitch to a 125 ft-lbs, clean all the threads like mentioned, and put high strength thread locker on there.

There is no threadlock strip on new OEM bolts.

I know that......however I've been told to put it on by reputable subie engine rebuilders.....so why not.....especially if he's having issues.

Josh, Professor was just asking if there was a locktite strip on the bolts and I was answering that. I would definitely put it on myself.

isnt the crankshaft pulley bolt supposed to be on much tighter than that? someone had a sticky or something about that where it ate the keyway on his friend's car. he had it torqued to specs but it still came loose. i torqued mine down toward the 130ft lb just in case. the haynes manual said like 80 to 90 ft lbs. i was like fuck that. ehh. jus lettin you know.
