do I change it?

Post by sullione »

Ok, this is probably a stupid question but I'll ask anyway. I just got the solenoid for my transmission so I'll have to drop the pan and get new fluid. I just (within the last year) swapped out the external tranny filter. My question is, should I treat it like a motor oil change and swap out the external filter again or leave it as is?

I'd suggest replacing the external and the internal. I'm not really sure if they have an internal filter, but a few of my other cars have. That's the one that is going to need to be replaced, IMO.

There is an internal filter/screen. I actually have one that I purchased from Kragen about 2 years ago in the hopes of swapping it out. I never did because I found out the there was an external one and I didn't know how to take the internal one out.

leave the external one alone. You don't need to change it. It's really just a screen.

I left mine alone for 140k+ miles

internal filter is re-useable

Post by Bheinen74 »

The internal filter is a metal screen box that is re-useable. If you take it out, rinse it thouroughly to get out any filings it may have. But most of the filings will be attached to the magnet on the bottom of the tranny pan. Just be careful of the rubber o-ring that is on the filter. Might want to replace it with a new one and not risk the chance it is dmaged or brittle
