Is my timing off?

Post by sullione »

Here's some history first. I did a timing belt job about 2-3 years ago. I put the car back together and it ran awesome, it had power that I didn't know was there. Then the pulley fell off. I put it back together without the TDC stuff (noob) but I made sure that the timing marks on the belt lined up with the ones on the cover. The car ran fine but the power I had was gone. :x Now, pulley came off again so its just sitting but I just lined up the marks again by rotationg the engine and I noticed that although the marks on the belt line up with the covers, the mark on the crank pulley doesn't line up with the one right above it on the engine. Is my timing off? I figured I'd throw it out to everyone since I always bug Josh (Legacy777).

The sprocket behind the pulley has a timing mark too!

You need to count the ribs 44 to the left, 40.5 to the right (?), or get a manual.

I wasn't clear before, the sproket behind the pulley is what isn't lined up with the timing mark above it. I did make sure that I counted the teeth last time.

Are you positive your using the correct mark? There are two marks, you must use the one on the back of the gear, on a little tab sticking out.

Binford, are you talking about the two marks on the sproket? I know there is an arrow and a subdued mark on the back of the sproket. I'm going by the subdued one on the back and lining it up with the mark just below the crank sensor (I think that's the crank sensor since it sits above the crank)

Yep, sounds right to me. I wouldn't worry about the marks on the covers, as long as you counted teeth and the marks on the belt line up with the marks on the gears. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay, I can leave it as is but what would cause my power loss? I've reset the ecu many, many times since this happened and I've even replaced the knock sensor. Do I need to replace anything else while its apart?

Every now and then, I notice a knocking sound coming from my car. Could this cause a power loss? I don't know engines real well but it sounds like the lifters? My wifes car made the same sound and a mechanic said it was the lifter. Would this cause the ecu to retard the timing?

Lifters tick (rapidly) and shouldn't cause the knock sensor to trip. You may have something else going on and an actual knocking sound could set off the sensor.

Counting teeth, schmounting teeth. I have never counted teeth. I swear by the marks on the belt. If they line up with the marks on the sprockets, then you're golden.

If the power loss happened AS SOON as you did the timing belt, then yeah, you might have it a tooth off or something...
