Cross-country trip in L wagon

Post by 0perose »

if you were going to take your gen 1 L wagon (awd, automagic) on a cross country trip, what would you bring for spare parts and what would you do before you left?

Extra fluids, lots of water, fix-a-flat, put the spare back in, and do a general check up. Also would inflate the tires to max to save a little gas on the highway (unless you're going through the desert as the heat could blow the tires from expansion).

I'd say clutch cable if you had an auto, I found myself using a cable from a bike in the middle of nowhere Wyoming once. I'll toss a vote in for checking the cooling system, that bit me once too. One other thing from my travels from ND to CO in my Legacy is to find a fuseable link before you go, Earl's truck stop doesn't have any. And don't fall asleep while your GF is driving through the high plains when she decides to to 110 for three hours, waking up to a highway patrol officer knocking on the window isn't cool.

I've done quite a few cross-country trips. Just do the main stuff, coolant, oil & filter change, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, radiator hoses if you're flushing the coolant, replace the wipers the normal stuff.....and you should be good....assuming you're not due for any timing belt, water pump stuff.

Check the tire pressure on the spare as well as the other tires. Don't use fix a flat unless you blow the spare too!

Duct tape is a good idea, put the old hoses & wipers in the trunk as spares. Road flares, jumper cables, blankets....probably not too necessary this time of year. Bring a quart or two of oil, as well as coolant jug, and wiper fluid. Damn bugs this time of year suck!

Forgot until Josh mentioned it - if you sleep overnight in the car, bring some screen material and tape cover an open sunroof or window to keep the bugs out.

I always carry fix-a-flat in case I get one in a place you don't want to be changing a tire.

we should have a list of willing helpers should anyone need help / garage / tools / parts on a journey like this... the BMW car club has such a list and many people have been saved from expensive shop repairs and long waits by willing helpers, all over the country

I would gladly give lodging and help to anyone needing it who is passing through (or breaking down in) Rhode Island

ok, so I really am going to go cross-country in my L wagon, with my girlfriend, and this "list of willing helpers" sounds like a good idea... perhaps a new thread should be made?
