KYB AGX's don't fit???

Post by Imprezive »

I was looking into KYB agx struts for my 1991 wagon but everywhere I have looked they don't carry them for MY91 but do for MY92 +

Don't say I didn't search because I did and many times but so far all signs point to no. I even looked at the Suspension comdendium and didn't get any information. I just need to know if they fit or do I need new mounts?

swapping which springs and struts from what years you use you could raise or lower your car and maintain factory suspension stiffness.
You can use the newer struts, but you'll also need to get newer springs, otherwise it will be all jacked up.

Oh, well good, because I was planning on maybe buyng some Whiteline springs. I did read that thread. I guess it just didn't register in my brain.

That's probably not entirely true. I'm using the same whiteline springs I was using in the rear. They are tapered, and meant for the 90-91's. However, stock springs might not give you entirely the same results.

Aren't you using 90-91 gr2's and 90-91 whiteline springs, josh?

I documented a bunch of cases where people were putting 92-94 struts on 90-91 springs and it was messing up their ride heights.

I suggest imprezive convert to 92-94 suspension. That would be agx's, whitelines for 92-94, and 92-94 spring perches (not necessarily 92-94 topmounts, but some fresh ones might be a good idea).

I used to have 90-91 GR2's.

When I did my AWD swap I put 92-94 AGX's on, but still kept my same 90-91 whitelines (smaller top dia), and it really didn't affect the ride height much.

It raised the entire car 1/4".

The only thing I will note is that I went from 90-91 FWD rear struts to 92-94 AWD rear struts.

Well the whiteline springs lower the car 30mm or about 1 1/4 I think. So if I put 92-92 kyb agx's I would only be 1/4 inch high. and the rear would be about 1/2 inch higher. I think...

Just like legacy777 right?

By the way legacy777 what spring rate were your whiteline springs? I thought whitelines were a little too stiff for GR-2's?

The fronts springs were a tad too stiff. It was a little underdamped, but livable.

Don't remember the spring rates, but I think they're around 200 or so. Whiteline I believe has that info on their site.

Underdampened even with AGX's?

no, the gr2's.

The whitelines would probably be fine with the 92-94 gr2's because I'm running the AGX's at the middle setting, which is equivalent to the GR2's.

Is there a difference in dampening between the 90-91 gr-2's and the 92-94 ones? Because on boxer4racing.com they have the 92-94's for $300 and the 90-91's for $400

Then the AGX's are $580 but thats for an impreza.

So I thought the 92-94's had better dampening abilities?

Maybe the price difference is due to the spring perches being different? Tirerack has similiar pricing changes between the years.

The damping rate on the front 92-94 KYB's is slightly greater then the 90-91 KYBS's.

The cost issue....not really sure why it's like that.

Ok so now that I have that sorted out I think I will go with some 92-94 GR-2's with the whitelines, unless I find something for appealing in the next month or so.

What about struts mounts? should I just go with some KYB OEM replacements or find something a little stiffer maybe?

I am planing a overall suspension rebuild, including the swaybar bushings and maybe an ALK in the neer future.

This should answer your question. I put AGX on my 90 L wagon (NA AWD 5MT) and also put them on my 91 Sport Sedan. [edit] all this with stock springs, top mounts, and everything. [/edit]

They fit fine, work great. Ride height may have changed slightly, but not really noticably.

Yes, there is no part number for an 90-91, only for 92-94. But don't worry about it. I think this is an oversight / KYB's screw up. Notice that the part number for a 92-94 Legacy is the same part number they recommend for 2000 Impreza RS - so this isn't exactly a precise science.

I guess you didn't find any of these threads in your search? Did you try searching for "KYB AGX"?

I wouldn't suggest running whitelines without agxs. IIRC, someone wrote to whiteline, and they suggested not running the gr-2's, because they didn't dampen very well

Ok, well I figured I'll just spend the extra $200 or so dollars for the AGX's and just do it right the first time. This post should probably stop because there is no point to it anymore.

hello.....I ran whitelines for 2 1/2 years & 15,000 miles with not brand new GR2's. As I've said before. They work fine, ride was fine. Only thing was under large bumps, but mainly large dips the springs felt slightly underdamped. Most people wouldn't even notice it.
