TD05, TD05H, are they all the same shape?
Just wondering... been looking around on eBay and can find a Mitsubishi TD05 or TD05H turbo, but rarely with a 16G compressor side. So - two questions:
1) What is the difference between the TD05 and TD05H? Please 'splain.
2) Speaking of the turbine (exhaust) side only here, will any TD05 or TD05H bolt right in to my Legacy's header and downpipe? Or do I specifically need the TD05H-16G from the WRX for the turbine side to mate up?
I am not concerned with the compressor side, as I plan to rebuild and replace that anyway. I just want a method that will get me the correct turbine side for me to mate a 16G or 18G wheel and housing to, and I want it cheap on eBay. So - can I depend on picking any old TD05, or TD05H - based turbo on eBay and not have to worry about fabricating new exhaust-side fittings or flanges...?

1) I think all the ones for Subarus are TD05Hes. It's possible that "TD05" is just short for "TD05H" or something; I don't know.
2) No. Only turbos made for Subarus will have the correct turbine inlet and outlet flanges. DSMs use different flanges.

TD05H is the designation for the TD05's with the correct flange pattern for Subarus. The regular TD05 might just be the DSM versions that have a different flange. They probably have a letter designation at the end too, like TD05L or something like that but they just aren't listing it.

Hardy - Yes; Evos use backwards-spinning turbos. So do Neons and PT Cruisers.
Chris - Right. To bolt up to our stock uppipe and downpipe, it has to have come from a Subaru (but not a pre-Legacy model or a Legacy 2.5GT or a Legacy twin-turbo).

Hmm, really? I thought the letter designations at the end pertained to the housing style, TD05 being the size of the housing and the H being the flange pattern designation.
Maybe I'm wrong though, it wouldn't be the first time. I was wrong once back in '92, no wait, I think it was '93. The wife has the date written down because everyone we know was completely shocked to hear I was wrong about something. It was a pretty big event.

I believe I saw a Subaru WRX turbo on eBay labeled TD04L. No consistency. Booooo.
So if these eBay chumps don't list that their TD05-whatever came from a Subaru WRX, then I can't buy it with confidence. Rats.

Like Jason says, you'll have to fabricate the piping between the compressor outlet and the throttle body (hopefully including an intercooler).
You'll also have to deal with the coolant lines. The lower line is almost the same as our stock one except it curves upwards at the end. You can probably make it work without modification. The upper line is different, though; it points in a very different direction. You may be able to simply flip it around the other way (by cutting the upper and lower lines apart and undoing the upper banjo joint -- use new copper washers).
You'll also have to do something custom with the PCV lines, since the stock ones will interfere with the compressor housing. With some creative use of hoses and adapters and whatnot this shouldn't be too bad.
You'll also need to remove your engine's rear lifting hook, as it interferes with the compressor housing as well.
You'll need to cut little slots out of the rubber elbow that leads into the compressor inlet, since the 16G has nubs in different places from the VF11.
Aside from all that, it's pretty much bolt-up.

perfect, thats what i wanted to know, so beyond some pipe work (for sure with an intercooler if im going that much bigger from the vf11) there is no metal fab required to bolt it right up to my OE exhaust? for that matter will an sti exhaust system bolt onto that later if i get my hands on one (has there been any changes in exhaust header flanges over the years? leggy/rs/wrx/sti)

You want the "H" wheel. It's a higher flowing wheel than the std one. The TD06 comes the same way, in either H or std. The 05, 06 wheels are still the same diameter. The H ones have more trim.

Not possible to say right now. It's never been run on the new build. The last one I didn't have any numbers on it. I bent a connecting rod about 9k miles into it. That was on STi EJ257 rods with other built and balanced parts. The new one is using Crower rods so I don't think it'll happen this time aroundImprezive wrote:

I expect over 515whp (Mustang dyno) for this one. CR is a little weird though. About 9.4:1 CR. Pump gas will be limited on boost but power under the curve will be fantastic and it'll ultimately shine on race gas.
