Bad Subie, bad.

Post by snowboarded »

A guy that I work with bought a brand new Legacy GT. After 180 miles his car stops. He gets it towed to the dealership, and it turns out that they said that his clutch was gone. Like fried harder than chicken in Kentucky.
Has anyone heard of any issues with the new legacies?

While I've only talked to a few '05 Legacy GT owners, none of them have had any problems. As Josh said he prob abused the hell out of that clutch or just can't drive.. 180 miles, geez.

A few locals have said they get major clutch stinkage issues. But no failures yet. I drove one for a day, and didn't have any problems.

Josh - If your doing burnouts, doesn't that mean the clutch ISN'T slipping?

Even riding the clutch, I can't imagine 180 miles killing it. It could have just been a defect. That DOES happen.

That all depends. You seen that video of a trans am doing a supposed burn out, but in reality, he's smoking his clutch.

He said that he was stuck in traffic for like 3 hours tho. Even if he did ride the clutch for a bit that shouldn't kill a brand new one, should it?

That could be. I mean I doubt he beat on the clutch that bad, he said that he has had a couple of subies and he is not new to driving a manual, so he knows how to drive in traffic.
He did say that the car had 38 miles on it when he bought it, so I think you're right Hardy, someone probably went out and had a little too much fun in it.
Either that or it was just a defect from the factory. Maybe a hairline fracture in the pressure plate that they didn't notice on final inspection...

How much abuse can a person do in 38 miles? And whatever the cause, at 180 miles the dealership should quickly and quietly replace the clutch under warranty (absolutely NO money out of pocket). Profuse apologies should follow, and they ought to throw in some floor mats or some other swag.

It simply has to be a defective part, or a botched assembly from the factory.

yeah, it seems like it'd have to be 38 miles of clutch smoking nasty smelling action, I would think, to roast a brand new factory clutch that fast.....

You'd be surprised what car dealers do to cars.

I worked at a Nissan Dealership, and the 350Z's on the lot had the hardest 30 miles of their lives on them. 70mph drifts, more time at 5000+RPM than below, launches and flat shifts, oh, and don't forget the gravel road bombings and dirt road rallies.

My brother-in-law's new truck came delivered complete with sidewall pinches in the tires from what looks like jumping curbs.

No, I wouldn't be particularly surprised. I know that kind of stuff goes on.

But I would be surprised if such behavior would destroy a perfectly good, correctly installed, brand new clutch in less than 200 miles.

This is certainly a case of a defective part or incorrect installation.

I think I'd refuse to buy any new car with more than 6 miles on it.
Seems like there's a lot of screwing around at dealerships.

Wouldn't you if you worked at a dealership?

I'd also say it was a defect on the clutch.

I could still beat on a car in 6 miles ;)

I had a nice AWD drift in a 96 turbo talon back when I worked at a dealership. It was pretty fun :)

I'm sure any of us could destroy a car within 1 mile. I'm guessing there would never be more than 6 legitimate miles put on a car as it was moved around the lot.
