front main seal

Post by Flip_x »

well looks like my front main seals blew up. dont know witch one yet because i just got home. 30 mile drive took about 10 quarts of oil  anyways it looks like a mini water fall when it runs..

how hard is it to change the seals? how much do they run? and anyways is there like a written area on how to change them.. thanks

Not very hard to change, they're cheap too, like 10 bucks each or something. You have to remove the timing belt to get at them, so you may want to do the water pump and reseal the oil pump at the same time.

Front seal isnt bad, cam seals are a bit tougher.

Honestly, I thnk its easier to remove the radiator, and hit the cam bolts with an impact.

Not everyone has an impact at home. You can get the same effect leaving the timing belt on, and loosening the bolts with it in 5th or with a screwdriver in the flexplate.

are you talking about the front cam seals and the front crank seal? the cam seals arent too bad, havent done a crank seal yet though. the cam seals are about 10 dollars each. dont forget the lil O-ring too.

not sure witch one is leaking. but i think its the oil pump seal. because it looses too much oil really fast. every where i go theres little drips all over the place...

how it got there was stupid royal purple. but boy did it run great with that stuff in.

royal purple... the degreaser? Why was that in the engine? One would think a degreaser would counteract the greasing action of the oil and not be a good thing :)

Royal Purple is a brand of synthetic oil.

ok the the peice that goes right on the on the crank shaft. it turns the timing belt.

does that only go on one way? or what because i took it off and i think i moved the crank so i could do something and its not where its suppost to be.

do i just turn it so that the number 1 cyl. is top dead center?

thanks

Do you have a service manual? You are going to want it when it comes time to put the timing belt back on. You probably did no damage, but want to align the marks on the gear, the cam gears and the belt when you put it back on. And, there is an order to re-installing the idler pullies. If you don't follow the order, you'll never get the belt back on properly...

Be sure to replace both the front main oil pump seal, as well as the little one behind the oil pump. Do the job right and remove the oil pump, remove all the liquid gasket, and reseal the whole pump...

You need to readjust your timing belt tensioner most likely.

Pull off the plastic cover and stick a hose down to the timing belt tensioner and listen. Rev the engine some while doing this. I bet you didnt get it on right, or its damaged.

OR,
you may have a bad HLA. Sometimes they pump back up, sometimes they don't...
