no turbo coolant tank

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

I found out my 94 turbo has no coolant tank
(the one on top by the master cyl)

is this an issue I should deal with immediately

ambient temp 85 plus

What do you mean it has no tank? Have they re-routed the lines so the turbo still gets some sort of cooling, or what? Can you provide some pictures of your engine bay?

Even if your turbo's not getting any coolant at all, you're not going to cause any immediate damage if you make sure never to park the car with the turbo hot. That means you should idle or run at low loads/RPMs for a few minutes before parking. And of course change the oil regularly, using a good synthetic lube. I'm not water-cooling my TD05-16G right now.

But the bigger concern is about your radiator cap... Did they relocate it somewhere else? A missing cap or one in a bad place could be a bigger problem.

First let me say thanks for the replies.

I must admit this is my first Legacy turbo, just got it on the road

I have owned multiple EA82Ts and know that engine pretty well.

I did not know I was suppose to have this what appears to be a "swirl tank"

The hoses that use to go to it, are connected as a by pass it seems.

The rad is from a non turbo unit and has a factory cap on it for pressure control.

Ah. If the hoses that used to go there are hooked to each other, your turbo's still watercooled. You just don't get the after-parking cooling effect that the tank normally allows for. So idling after driving should be fine.

The non-turbo radiator should be good enough; it's a bit oversized for its original application anyway. When you start making a lot more power than stock it may become an issue.

Vikash, thanks for the support and the excellent
picture of the orig plumbing

I am going to try and sort out what has been done to mine.

On your scan

I see the output line from the turbo but not where the input line
connects to.

EA82Ts have a connection to the head in this location.

So do EJ22Ts... I guess I could add that line to the diagram. I'll see if I can do it neatly.

But, yeah, that lower coolant pipe on the turbo connects to a C-shaped hose that connects to a pipe attached to the passenger-side cylinder head with a banjo fitting. It's probably exactly like the EA82T.

I had a look here is what I've got

the long thin hard line from the rad
to the tank has no hoses on either end
(non turbo rads do not have a fitting)

The hose from the turbo is connected to the hose
that runs to the H20 pump thermostat housing.

The overflow tank is in the normal position and
connected to the rad cap neck as per normal n/a setups

Temp gauge sits just south of half way, after bighill climbs it is
level or at the half way mark.

Hmm... I guess that's right. Though I wouldn't really expect to see the temperature rise that much. Can you hook up my scantool and see what the water temperature is?

yep, thanks.. that one worked fine as did Vikash's

I see now the hose in question and some other interesting parts
very kewl

I have not put the laptop in her yet to see the real temp
but the gauge reads very similar to my NA 84 GT wagon.


leaving for vay kay tomorrow (not in her)

will investigate further when I return
